When our son was born, I knew that the bond between him and my husband would be stronger than it would be with me. Dad’s and their son’s go together like coffee and cream, just meant for each other. It was rather ironic when it turned out to be not the case. Even though Mattison and I had a rough start with bonding due to postpartum depression, eventually we were glued to one another. Even today at seven years old, he comes to me for playing catch in the yard, baking in the kitchen, and learning how to ride his bike. Maybe it’s the tomboy in me, who knows.
Then our daughter came along. I thought for sure, we would be special buddies. After all, there’s only certain things a girl can do with her mom…go shopping, paint toenails, imaginary tea time … umm nope. Evidently tea time is reserved for daddy. (I’ve got proof below). I pink swore my hubby I wouldn’t blog this picture, but come on, it’s pure sweetness. And a bit of a chuckle to see a 6 ft 3 in, 200 something lb man stuffed into a Rose Petal Cottage.
I’ll admit, I’m a bit jealous how their time together. The reality is, I’m not very good when it comes to imaginary play and girly things. I was the kid that cut off her Barbie’s hair and painted camo on their faces, tracked deer prints in the woods, and played war with my male friends. Getting into the girl side of playtime is a stretch for me.
Last night I thought I would give this playtime in the giant dollhouse a shot. After spending 5 minutes trying to shove my tooshie through the 2 ft wide door (hello Cat? why not just split the house in half?) I finally made my way in and watched as my daughter pretended to pour me a cup of juice. I pretended to drink it while she put a skillet on the stove and cooked me a giant onion and slice of watermelon. It was nice seeing her imagination at work, but it all felt so forced to me. I just didn’t get it.
While we may never share that girly bond, I’m glad that my husband is the dad that can be the “mom” I may never be.

I just love it when Dad play with their daughters. It just melts my heart. Have you ever seen that commercial where the dad is teaching his daughter how to do cheerleading? It always brings a smile to my face.
That picture is so sweet!

That is positivly the cutest photo I’ve ever seen! What a greta daddy! You and your kids are so lucky!
That is precious! I can already see that Steven has his “Daddy’s girls”
I always thought I wanted girls to do the girly things with but now I see that even with a girl that may not happen! Love my boys though.
yes I guess that if Dr Freud were here he would be in much agreement of what is happening at your house
