Country Fried Steak and Gravy Recipe

Oye… well…I’ve been hesitant to share this recipe. Not because it’s bad but because I didn’t pull it off right. I’m really irritated that as great as it looked and smelled, I wasn’t able to eat it. You see, everything was perfect until I tried to cut the meat. I kid you not, this was the toughest cut of meat I’ve ever had in my life. But…the gravy, the breading, it was all perfect! Next time I think I’ll just tweak it for country fried chicken.

What You’ll Need:

  • 8 strips of bacon
  • 1/4 cup Crisco vegetable shortening
  • 2 thin bottom round steaks (my mistake)

For breading:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 TBS black pepper
  • 1 TSP salt

For gravy:

  • 3 TBS flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 TSP black pepper

Directions:

  1. In a pie pan, add breading ingredients, except the egg, and mix well. In a second pie pan, add the eggs and mix well.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, fry your bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon and add it to your green beans (or just munch it while cooking).
  3. Add 1/4 cup Crisco vegetable shortening to bacon grease.
  4. Season your meat with a pinch of salt/pepper, dip in flour, dip in egg, dip in flour again, dip in egg again, and dip in flour a third time.
  5. Carefully add battered meat to skillet and fry on each side 5 – 7 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Remove meat. In grease, whisk in flour and turn up heat to medium-high until it thickens. Add milk and seasoning. Continue to whisk until gravy thickens.
  7. I like to serve mine with mashed potatoes and green beans.

Maybe someone can suggest a better cut of steak to use. Let me know if you find one!
