Dyson or Diamonds this Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is just two days away and couples everywhere are thinking of how they will express their love for one another. The question is, how will you express that love? Are you buying flowers, boxes of chocolates, greeting cards, diamond encrusted jewelry or baking cookies? Those are all thoughtful and sincere gifts, but are they practical and really wanted?

According to a study by Caravan Opinion Research with support from Dyson, the answer might surprise you.

When it comes to receiving gifts on Valentine’s Day, one-third of women surveyed want a vacuum over a diamond this Valentine’s Day. Two-thirds (69%) of women would prefer to receive a practical gift to use often, with one-fourth (26%) citing that they would like to receive a top of the line vacuum (ranging from $200-$500).

Additional findings:

34% of women would like to receive a Dyson brand vacuum as a gift—the most of any competing brand.
4 out of10 women would rather receive a Dyson over a monthly cleaning service (39%), diamond jewelry (38%), or a massage (38%) for Valentine’s Day.
Women with household income of $50k-100k (11%) are more likely than those with a household income under $35k (4%) to be envious when a friend or neighbor has received a Dyson vacuum cleaner as a gift.

For me, the answer is quite simple. I would much rather receive a practical gift like a Dyson over a diamond. While diamonds are pretty to look at and do last forever, a Dyson is a gift that keeps on giving.
