About Baby Signs by Author Kyle Olmon
BABY SIGNS is based on American Sign Language and will help encourage the use of non-verbal gestures to communicate. Research has proven that babies who are taught to use signs to express their basic ideas before they can say words are happier because they can communicate with others.
From early morning wake-up to eating, playtime to bedtime, BABY SIGNS will teach baby and parent their first seventeen signs to communicate with each other. Features beautiful pop-ups, pull-tabs and a mini-poster!
Hands On Experience
My time is often stretched with three kids in the house and one thing we love to do is one on one story time with each of them alone. I also try to maximize our time by including books that offer educational value. The Baby Signs Pop-Up Book did just that. Kaydence, our 2 year old, is fascinated by the pop up children. As we went through each page we were introduced to simple hand signs that are relevant to a young child who can’t quite verbalize their needs.

Kaydee’s favorite part of the book are the tabs included on each page that can be pulled to control the character actions. Right away she understood the hand sign for QUIET. The little girl on the page moves her index finger from her lips and back down to demonstrate the hand sign when you pull the tab. Some of the other signs included are: Eat, Bath, Mommy, I Love You, Help and more.
Mom Approved
Baby Signs gets two big thumbs up from us! Each pop up is detailed and fun, clearly illustrating simple signs that our toddler can imitate. I even had a little fun learning new signs as I practiced them with my toddler.
Mom Improvements
As much as we love the book, the pages can be easily torn by busy little fingers. You have to be very careful when closing the pop-up pages as they are intricate and detailed.
Buy It
Baby Signs is available at the Scholastic Store online for $19.99 and includes a mini signs poster.

I introduced my son to signing when he was 6 months old. He is now almost two and still uses some of them although he is very verbal. I just looked up the signs on the internet. I’m going to sign again with my baby girl coming in less than two weeks!

I love reading with my kids! I also love the convenience of audiobooks. When I’m busy and need a minute, I’ll put mine down in the living room with an audiobook. It keeps their minds engaged and they like hearing books they’ve already read done with voice actors.
I buy them at http://www.booksonboard.com. They always have discounts and promos, so the cost is really reasonable. There’s also the option of burning them to CD so you can take them in the car with you! I just bought Amelia Bedelia’s First Valentine and they loved it!
our son does use a few signs – we love it!!! milk is too cute!

We don’t have a baby yet but my husband and I are learning sign language this summer as a family project! So I’d love to try this out! I am a dog trainer and so naturally I use hand signals with the dogs. I would imagine you and your baby could make up your own signs very easily for important things like their favorite foods, toys and activities like napping, swinging or reading a book.
We’ve introduced signing via dvd and books. Plus we try to use them whenever we talk, especially during meals. We don’t know how successful we’ve been but we figure it doesn’t hurt to do it!

We used a book and flashcards & she learned them pretty quickly. Even though she is very chatty now, she still does many of the signs while saying the word. I wish we would have taught her more-she loves them, and it really does help with communication! This would actually be for my SIL, who has one year old twin boys, and is due in October with her 3rd boy. Thanks!

I taught my preschoolers to use sign language by modeling in natural teaching situations. I plan to teach signs to my baby too (3mo). I am interested to see this book!
I was really active in teaching my first daughter sign language from birth and she did great with it. I haven’t been so active in teaching my second daughter. She’s picked up a few signs but I honestly just don’t work as hard with her. We used to love watching Signing Time together and the girls would pick up a lot of signs there. But our local PBS no longer carries Signing Time! Sad!!
I want to teach my daughter signs soon. I watched a video from the library that says to start around 6-7 months. I want to teach her nurse, more, please, and diaper change. We will probably do airplane (we live by an airport), dog, and sleep somehow quickly after that. It would be so wonderful to communicate with her!
We watch Signing Time on PBS. I have taught my daughter the sign for “to nurse” so when we are out in public she isn’t pulling my shirt or yelling for milk. It has come in so handy and I would love to teach her more.

the only sign i taught was more, which i learned from a friend. we had a “sign” for all done as well, but we got that from my sister
I have have been teaching my baby sign language since she was about 9 or 10 mos. We don’t use any books or dvds but I just repeatedly show her the signs throughout the day. She use a few of them on a daily basis. They include “milk, more, and eat”. We are working on “please”. I love watching her use her signs to communicate what she wants!
We have started signing with her, sorta. We keep forgetting to be consistent but maybe this book will help! We didn’t use a dvd or a book, I know simple signs from my brother.
I liked the Wonderworld – 50 Piece Block Set. M daughter is the perfect age for these.
My daughter isn’t due until October but I’m sure she will figure out her own language. I took classes for actual sign language but I never thought about teaching it to my daughter at a young age!

I have recently introduced signing to my toddler after it being suggested by his new speech therapist. It’s amazing how much he’s picked up and enjoyed himself in just a month! He LOVES being able to communicate with us now and we also love how happy he is when he can tell us something. We have used DVDs from the library and he loves them, but we also work on them with him by ourselves so we think both methods work well. I’m really excited to try a book, though, since we haven’t yet. I’m sure, since he loves reading and signing, that it would be a huge hit. Thanks for doing this!!!

I have tried sign language with my baby, but I don’t have anything that works for me. I didn’t even know there were books or DVD’s on this. I had a friend show me a couple of signs to work with my baby on. What would be great for me would be signs for the basic needs like, milk, drink, food/eat, up, down and things like that. They would be a very useful way to communicate with a non-verbal child. Wow, I could sure use al of this. Thank you for the review and giveaway.

We used “My Baby Can Talk” DVDs with our first child. The worked well. You just have to pay attention to your child’s variations of the signs because they will most likely differ slightly from the actual sign.
I think the most helpful signs are more, eat, drink, and done. We focused on those with our kids.
I have not introduced baby signs yet- but my daughter is 1 now and I want her to know it- so I need to get on it!

Mom of 4 babies — My babies and I have our own language – on our own, not from books. Each of my babies had unique ways. Fun to get to know them individually. My youngest Lukey was born extremely early and was in the NICU for a long time. My tiny 2 pound baby let me know in his baby sign language that he wanted to nurse. He kept putting his little tiny fist a certain way over his mouth and then looking at me – over and over. Finally, the Dr. let me try nursing Lukey – he did it!!! Rare for NICU baby. Blessings

I am hard of hearing, so I’d welcome my granddaughter learning some keep words. My husband learned the word for bathroom or toilet and he uses it when we are at a social or community place to let me know that that is where he is going. Yhose are the places where I hear & understand the least.
We taught very basic signs to our first daughter (now 2) – “please,” “more,” “potty,” and “wash.” I learned the signs in a book and then taught her by showing her.
I will probably do the same thing for our baby (3.5 months old). I prefer teaching through books or “modeling” since we rarely watch TV in our house.
Thanks for the terrific giveaway! I’d be thrilled if I won.

I haven’t tried sign language with my little one but think the simple signs like please and thank you would be great to learn.

Haven’t tried sign language yet but I’d love to teach words like “hungry” or “wet.” Would mean a lot less guessing for me! Thanks!

There was no baby sign language when my son was young but I think it would be very helpful for hungry, thirsty and if possible, tired. I hope to be ready for my grandchild whenever….

I think signs like eat and drink would be useful for my niece to learn to help her communicate with us while she is learning how to talk and read

I think Hungry, Thirsty, and More would be good to learn; it would make meal time easier.
