Baked Apple Pie Bread Pudding Recipe

To keep it short and sweet … this is the absolute best bread pudding I’ve ever eaten in my life. Not only that, but it puts a fun twist on your everyday bread pudding by taking the best part of apple pie and mixing it right in.

Getting things started you’ll want to preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and a day before you will be making this, cut a loaf of Italian bread into large cubes. Let the cubes dry out overnight on a cookie sheet.

Next, you’ll want to prepare the custard filling by combining the following ingredients.

Bread Pudding Custard Ingredients

  • 3 eggs, 4 egg yolks
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 4 cups half and half
  • 1 cup of milk

With all of the custard ingredients mixed, poor them directly over the cubed Italian Bread in a large baking pan.

While the bread crumbs are soaking, cut 2 green apples and 1 fuji apple into 1/2 inch cubes.

Toss the apples in 1/2 TBS of apple pie spice and 1/2 cup of white sugar.

Mix the apples into the bread and custard mixture.

Place your bread pudding pan inside a large baking pan. Fill the outside pan with hot tap water until the water reach halfway up the side of the pan. Cover the large baking pan with aluminum foil and poke a few holes to allow steam to escape. Bake covered for 45 minutes.

Remove the aluminum foil and bake for an additional 45 minutes and set aside.

Next we’ll make the sweet, Spiced Amaretto glaze by melting 1 stick of butter over medium heat.

Add 1/8 of a cup of Amaretto liquer, 1/2 tsp apple pie spice and 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar until well mixed.

Pour the glaze over your warm bread pudding and serve.

This is especially tasty when served ala mode style, just like your favorite apple pie.

Really? I use to feel the same way but I’ve found when you mix it up with some of your favorite flavors, bread pudding can be a really comforting dessert, especially in the coolers months.

    • Cat Davis says:

Oh gosh you NEED to try bread pudding. I use to actually despise it as a kid, the idea of soggy bread was revolting but with the baked in custard it’s more creamy and slightly chewy than it is soggy.

Bread Pudding is one of my all time favorites and this one looks like it could be better than the blueberry/cream cheese version I’ve been craving lately! Will have to thaw out some frozen bread and make it this weekend! yummo!

  17. Man that looks delicious!! Bread pudding and apple pie are two of my hubby’s favorite deserts so I am sure he will LOVE this recipe. I will definitely be making this for Thanksgiving dinner this year. Thank you SO much for this recipe. I am really enjoying your new blog, thanks for all the great recipes!

  18. Just by looking at the pictures made me really hungry! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe to us as I would surely give this one out a try in the coming weekend. Im gonna host a party and this would definitely be a hit in dessert. Would go really well with a hot cup of coffee made from my manual espresso machine at home. Kudos!

Diabetic version: Use white Sourdough bread ( slows digestion), replace sugar with 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce, & 1/2 cup baking splenda. I would also use unsweetened almond milk and/or organic whole milk. For added flavor boost, instead of sauce, add a dollup of “no sugar added apple butter ” to each serving.
