I would say I’m like most women creeping towards 30, silently hoping and praying the day never comes. While I swore I’d never be one of those women, the ones that celebrated 29 until so many years passed that their own children don’t even truly know their true age. But I am. Yesterday, I turned 27! Gah! I know, anyone over the age of say…30, probably wants to smack some sense into me and give me the “you’re so young, you have no idea what old is” speech. Don’t, I’ve heard it and turning 27 just stinks to me. Having my husband tease me about being “old” all day long didn’t help either.
What did help was baking! I know, that sounds like an old lady thing, but it’s true. Nothing makes me feel more warm and fuzzy than cracking eggs and whipping batter. All of the icing and decorating is fun too!
What made today more special was last month I received a beautiful package from Wilton that included the new ULTRAGOLD bakeware and lots of decorating goodies. I was like a kid on Christmas morning, poking through the box, dreaming up future baking projects.
Then Sunday came and I couldn’t wait to put them to good use. As nice as it would have been to have my husband bake me a birthday cake, it was much nicer to do it myself and actually have it edible. Sorry honey if you’re reading this, please stick to boiling water!
Gearing up for my birthday cake project, I prepped the shiny gold Aluminum 8 inch square baking pans with grease and dusted them with flour. Not that I didn’t trust the bakeware to do the job of keeping my cakes from sticking, it’s just a habit of mine and is actually quite fun.
In the oven my pans went, filled with confetti colored cake batter. My favorite feature by far, the large handles sticking right out front. I have quite the habit of losing my oven mitts, yes, all dozen or so of them and typically end up grabbing a folded clean sock to pull hot pans out. The handles made this so much easier and less likely to burn myself or drop the finished cakes in the process.
As you can see, the cakes came out just beautifully. No burning on the bottom, evenly baked throughout, perfection!
Of course, the best part was decorating. A thick coat of some rainbow chip icing, topped off with these cute little Sweet Dots Royal Icing Decorations from Wilton made this part easy on me. As much as I love decorating, it’s definitely not a talent of mine. The prepackaged decorations made it easy to give my cake a little flair without any work on my part.
This was definitely the highlight of my birthday considering what a disaster our dinner out turned out to be. I’ll share more on that later, including my little tiff with IHOP. And special thanks to my my husband for cleaning up my baking mess!
Fortunately for you and me, this isn’t the end of my birthday chatter. Our youngest daughter, Emma, is turning 1 this month and we have a lot of topics coming up surrounding birthday parties, baking and even a special giveaway from Wilton that will include the cake pans and decorations plus a TON of more goodies!
And a very big THANK YOU for all the birthday wishes on twitter and Facebook yesterday. I promise I was ignoring everyone, just busy baking, eating and reading.

Cat,
I apologize for missing the memo; Happy belated birthday!!! “You’re so young, you have no idea what old is!” Don’t worry; it keeps getting better and better. You made a beautiful cake. I just love Wilton baking products. They make you want to bake.
Wow! Your cake turned out beautifully. The colors put me in the mood for springtime. I can’t wait to see how your daughter’s first birthday cake comes out.
Your sooo good at baking! Happy Belated Birthday! I’m 27, but will be 28 in 13 days ACCCCK!
Kas
The cake looks lovely! Happy Belated Birthday!
What a beautiful cake! Happy day after your birthday!
Wow – my b’day is coming up, can you make a cake like that for me, too? LOL Happy Belated Birthday. Hope it was a good one!
Happy birthday!!!!
That cake looks so yummy! And the decorations are too cute!
Happy belated birthday! I completely understand how you feel about the whole growing older thing. At the end of December I turned 28 and my husband teased me too
Happy [belated] Birthday! That is a beautiful cake, and very professional in appearance! I am amazed.
Next, I will not tell you how young you are, but I will tell you that my best and favorite years were from 26 to 35. I looked the best of any other time in my life, I felt relatively healthy and energetic, and I still felt a belief in endless opportunity.
I have learned (at the ripe old age of 38) to be happy with where I am now, also. I am still relatively healthy, though perimenopausal symptoms have begun to creep in and little aches and pains as well. I have a wonderful family whom I love, and I am happy for every day I am given. Life is too valuable to worry about aging or my failing youthful looks.
Savor 27. It is still less than 30.
p.s. Didn’t your hubby just turn Dun Dun Dun…30?! So all his teasing makes him still…older than you…out of his 20′s. Good for teasin’ him right back!
Happy Birthday!!! Hope you had a fun day! Beautiful cake! And 27 really isn’t bad
I’ll be 29 in May ugh…LOL I’m so much closer to 30 than you LOL
Happy Birthday! And what a BEE-YOO-TIFUL cake. loves it.
what a beautiful cake Happy Birthday to you. I cried when I turned 25 and believe I will do it again this year when I turn 40
aww you did a great job! Did you see the birthday cake I made Sam?
I know, I turn 27 this year too. I felt like that last year turning 26, I don’t know how I will feel this year turning 27.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
What a simply GORGEOUS cake!! I would definitely be proud of myself if my cake came out even REMOTELY amazing as that one
Maybe I should get me some of those cake pans so I can practice!!
I’m late, but I want to wish you a happy, happy birthday-You know how I feel about age so I’ll spare you the paragraph rant. LOL
Hopefully your birthday was everything you wanted!
Looks yummy, Happy birthday and many more!
I love to bake, but lets face it, on my birthday I want someone else to bake my cake…. I just love surprises…. My hubby bake I don’t even think so….. so that would be a big surprise, my son on the other hand is a wonderful baker.
As usual a great job at making me hungry again. Looks delicious and those cake pans are awesome!!! Thanks for sharing
What a beautiful cake… and how sweet of Jon to clean up your mess, that is the BEST thing they can do. Sorry I am late in wishing you a Happy Birthday, but I am late for eveything! I hope you had a great time, except for the IHOP thing which I am sure to read about once I catch up.
Well,…am sorry I missed your birthday (Lord you ARE young…I hardly remember 27!), but am so glad I didn’t miss this review! I am a crazy obsessed baker and I love my old pans and they do have some sentimental value. BUT, I am so envious of these pans! I love that they have the handle grips on them…I have actually dropped WHOLE pans of cake, brownie or bars to the floor so this would be GREAT for me. (kind of a butterfinger now due to some health issues)
I am putting these on my wish list for MOther’s DAy! thanks!
