As a parent, I’ll be the first to admit, sometimes reading can be a little boring, especially when you’ve read the same book over and over and over again. But something I realized this week is it doesn’t have to always be like that. Reading can be tons of fun when you put your imagination to use and get the whole family in on the fun.
Family can bring books to life in some amazing ways. One idea is to act out a story giving everyone in the family a character part. Right now my daughter’s favorite character is Dora the Explorer. Just reading about Dora and her adventures in a paper book isn’t nearly as much fun as watching her story come to life in the VTech V.Reader. We recently got the new book, Dora and The Three Little Pigs.
To really make this story fun, after watching Dora and her friends help the Three Little Pigs, we went on an adventure of our own right in our backyard. Everyone had their part, my 3 year old Kaydee as Dora, baby sister Emma as her trusty sidekick Boots, my 9 yr old son the sneaky Swiper while my husband and I helped guide them through their backyard adventure.
Now I want you and your family to go on a reading adventure and have a family reading night of your own! Enter below to win a very nice reading prize pack courtesy of VTech!

Cat,
We have a weekly night that we call book night where the children and I cuddle together, wrap ourselves up in blankets (on mommy and daddy’s bed – extra special), grab a bunch of books, and just read until we get tired and sleepy. A few of our favorites are The Bake Shop Ghost, Library Lion, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, and recently, The Girl Who Wore Too Much.
Cat,
I’m a public friend connect follower.
I have read all 7 of the LITTLE HOUSE books by Laura Ingalls Wilder to my children. It took several years to complete. I found the best time to read was during the long winter months. We’d snuggle up in blankets near the fire with the lights low and enjoy the adventure!
The V READER looks really fun!
Thanks,
Becky Jane

This would give her the opportunities to learn on her own as well as with me and her dad. I have a in home daycare center, she could even read to the babies
After bath we put a soft music (low volume)and read a book to our son and at the the end we ask him questions and reward himif he gives answer.

My three year old loves for me to read to him and always has, but what I like to do now is get him excited about reading to his baby brother that just turned seven months. I read to them together and have my older son point out pictures and tell his brother what things are, count objects, etc. His baby brother seems to enjoy it even more when his big bro is involved.

We read to the kids at bedtime, but it would be nice to set time aside for a family reading night. Maybe after dinner, and before the kids bedtime would work. It’s also nice for older children to read to the younger ones. Thanks!

We have animal masks from Lakeshore Learning and will wear them when reading to our little one! She loves that we look so silly and it keeps her engaged. There are so many animal themed books that we never seem to run out of books to read!
we go search out adventures at the library and have family night reading alone and to eachother
My son is only 19 months old so we don’t get too fancy, just read him 3 or 4 books before bedtime, making it as interactive as possible, asking him about what he sees, etc.

We are low key when it comes to reading at nightime. We like quiet, dim light, etc. We read to our son after bath time, when he is most relaxed and ready to listen {and sometimes read a long} after a long day of playing. We like to read stories like ThunderCake, Good Night Moon, Marley and Me, and Strega Nona. We sometimes make a light snack to go along with our books of choice as well. But not always.

We Sit at the kitchen table with a chapter book and take turns reading it
My kids love reading. Every friday we go to walmart and allow the kids to get some popcorn, and pick one of their $3 books. We go home, and instead of movie night, we have Story Time and we read 2 books along with popcorn and then my son goes back through the books, and reads them to us. ( He is four, and tells his own story by telling us what the picture says! Its very cute!

So far, I’ve been really lucky with my son! He absolutely LOVES to read. Pretty much anything makes him happy. If we’re having a night that he isn’t as into it, we just find a classic like Goodnight Moon and he’s all over it. Or anything with cars, trucks, etc. My husband is the best at making the voices. If it’s a book we read often, we have my son “read” some parts to us. He loves it!

Finding a book interesting to all is key. We’ve been reading the Eddie Dickens series by Philip Ardaugh–it’s funny and makes us want to all read it.
Reading is already a huge part of our family, so I don’t have to do to much to entice my son to read. However, to make things fun and interesting, we visit our public library and stay awhile. There are tons of resources. The children can color, play games on the computer, purchase really inexpensive books, and check-out a lot of books too. They can even use their own library card. This makes them feel all grown-up.

Reading is the foundation for all other learning
I love to read with my kids. However reading with my husband usually takes on more of a parallel role (we both sit in bed and read at the same time). My son has been wanting me to read Dr. Seuss books over and over again. He doesn’t yet understand the rhyming concept, but the books are helping him learn. I will periodically pause to let him finish the sentence (“Not in the rain, not on a _____”) and he’s getting good at choosing the right word. My daughter has been enjoying reading Shel Silverstein poems. I have an idea that I’m hoping to implement tonight that involves each family member taking turns reading and acting out Shel Silverstein poems. I know our little guy (although he won’t be able to participate as much) will really enjoy seeing the book come to life.

We really don’t do anything regarding reading. Our daughter reads all day long nonstop, so we don’t even have to do anything to promote it. At six years old, she can read anything an adult can.
I get my granddaughter every Saturday afternoon, for the past several weeks, we’ve been heading to the library to return last weeks books and get some new ones. Depending on what’s going on, are usually what books we get, a couple of weeks ago, we went to a local carnival, so the books we got that weekend were about carnivals. Last week, we took my granddaughter fishing, so….we got books on fishing. My granddaughter is 3 years old and she loves when Nana reads her books. She also loves the library.

I think it is important for the kids to see adults reading, so instead of a movie night, have a family reading night. Sit together in the living room reading–make some hot cocoa and then talk about the books.
my daughter loves reading. We curl up in my bed before her bedtime and read at least 4-5 books. lately we have been reading this conglomeration of bible stories, poems, and hymns. We get call crazy and fun by singing the songs and making our own hand motions to go with it! We have so much fun!

They both love books with cars, trucks, and animals. Connor is a HUGE Dr. Seuss fan. The boys will let me read to them for hours at night before bed time. Micah sits in my lap and Connor sits next to me.

I have to admit we have never had a family reading night. I do my best to encourage my daughter to read, but it’s not easy. I think it would be fun to do a theme night. You could pick out a book, for example, The Pokey Little Puppy, then you can make little dogs out of construction paper, make some “puppy chow” and read the book to the kids.
i don’t know how creative it is, but for reading time all five of us pile into my toddler’s bed and we read together. the kids love it!
I read a book each to my two girls every night. I agree that the same book over and over gets old but it is rewarding when they try to read along. My oldest likes to sleep with her chosen book after I’m done reading it.

A family trip to the library can kick off a fun night. I always let the kids get a stack of books, and my husband and I got a few for ourselves. After dinner, we’d lay out a blanket, and hang out in the family room reading together. If the kids’ books started to get too boring for me, I just read my own.

We did family reading last night… my 18 year old daughter started The Last Song, a novel by Nicholas Sparks that has been made into a movie, and she finished the book today. I read 2 books to our toddler, Emergency Vehicles and a book on Trains (his favorite right now). Sorry, I didn’t read (I had finished The Last Song two days ago and passed it on to my daughter) and my husband worked until almost 10pm and didn’t read. The night was ….hmmm… I’d say… quiet.

My 3 boys love when I sit in our oversized chair and they all pile on me while I read to them. Even the 11 year old loves this!

We have a one hour reading “time out” 3 nights a week. My 4 yr old sits with his sounds/letters book and sounds out his words. Our 2 foster babies ages 19 & 26 months get their hard back books and pretend to read. It’s hilarious. But I hope I am instilling in them a life long love of books.

My daughter hates to read, so we usually do it together. I do a page and then she does a page.

We always join the summer reading program at the local library and it really gets the kids excited about reading all summer long.

I love reading the Richard Scarry books to my son! My husband also reads to him too! My husband likes to interject things into the stories to make me life! It’s pretty funny and we usually end up laughing by the end!

My daughter is 3 1/2 and LOVES books. We read books with a lot of repetition…I begin the sentence and she finishes while looking at the words. Of course she has it memorized, but she gets so excited when she “reads”. We also act out our books after we read them.

It’s not unique, but we let the kids pick out a book for us to read together each night before bedtime.

MANDATORY ENTRY: I read to my daughter every single night while I put her to sleep. If one story doesn’t work, my daughter will attempt at reading the same story to me, but instead of reading the story, she makes up one according to the pictures. It’s very amusing!

My 4 year old grandson would love tthreader :e is very smart with the help of his older brother and sisgerlpove h
I found that if I set goals for minutes read for my older children and books read for my younger child it is exciting to “earn” reading rewards which can be anything from a small toy, to a trip to the ice cream parlor!

My granddaughter always brings a book when she comes. We snuggle in the bed and I start reading first, when it gets real interesting I hand the reading over to her.
mostly animal (farm) books

I have been reading a lot of books lately and I have noticed that the little ones want to read because I am reading. I also am having the older kids read to the younger kids and share with them books that they enjoyed when they were younger.

We like to all climb on Mommy and Daddy’s big bed…everyone picks out a book to read to the others. Pre-readers still share a favorite book and make-up or tell their story any way they want(this gets interesting) No pressure on the readers or making it school like in any way. Mom and Dad sometimes read a chapter of a book each time or a poem. We do this every Wednesday(hump day).
It brightens up the middle of the week.
Stories are still read at bedtime other nights of the week.

Especially in the summertime, one of the best ways to get children excited about reading is to enroll them in the reading programs that virtually all public libraries have. That can lead to discussions of books and interest in other books as well.

I let both my children pick a book for me to read. My children are 10 years apart but even my oldest likes to hear me read. My small always picks a young reader but my oldest varies. Sometimes it’s something like Dr Seuss and sometimes it from older level books like the boxcar kids. We always make sure it’s appropriate for everyone. Then they bring a pillow and blanket to the living room floor or we pile up in my bed and read.
we like to sit in the back yard and read where it is peaceful and quiet..no tvs, radios or any distractions

Family reading night is every night at my house. We make it fun by having books at kid level so they can pick and choose themselves. We also have books based on movie they love like Toy Story, Nemo, Dr. Seuss, etc…They enjoy reading alot so it isn’t hard to get them interested in plopping down and reading a book outloud.

Family reading night’s a great idea. We’ve started fun, easy to read chapter books that we can read in about a week.

I love getting funny books for my kids to read. It makes reading fun. Some nights my daughter will sit up and read calvin and hobbes out loud and laugh quite a bit. It’s nice to see her excited about reading.
We like to play make up a story one person starts and then the next and then the next. It is a lot of fun the kids love doing it the stories are super silly. They also love their dad to act out read them stories. eaglesforjack@gmail.com
