Improvising in the Kitchen

sockovenmitt

Yep, it’s a sock, to be more specific it’s my son’s sock…but it’s a clean one. Sometimes I find myself having to improvise with things in the house to get the job done. In this case, I used a sock in place of something made specifically for the job…oh say an OVEN MITT. LOL I really do own oven mitts, where there are, that is yet to be determined.

Back when my husband and I first moved in together we had this old electric stove with coils, it wasn’t like the pretty flat top one we have now. So I go wandering into the kitchen to see what he’s cooking and what do I see? I slice of bread directly on top of the red hot coil, no skillet, no even a pot, bread right on the coil. Of course I had to ask what the heck he was doing. His response, “making toast.”

Yeah, we’re a strange family.

Sometimes I feel like I am the only mom with unwashed dishes and the only mom who can loose all the hand towel for three months at a time. Thank you for posting this.

LOL no, you’re definitely not alone. I haven’t seen one of my cutting boards in 6 months…yeah, who loses a cutting board???

Yum, that looks good. LOL at the sock. I only have 1 oven mitt and got it when we got married….5 years ago. It’s shot and ALWAYS forget to pick up a new one.

I have had to do that before or a dishtowel is more common there are times I just need it out and grab whatever is at hand

Aha…a dish towel, now why didn’t I think of that? oh wait, those are missing in the 5 ft mound of laundry too. :-)

Awesome, and here I thought I was the only one that did crazy stuff like this ! Glad to know I’m not alone! Your Hubby is awesome , I would have never thought of doing something like that! When the man wants toast he wants toast ! Have a great day Cat

Lol – you are brave, I think that I would probably burn myself right thru the sock! I baked an apple pie last night and had to use a dish towel to get it out of the oven.

  9. LOL!! My household does plenty of improvising, too. Great post, and that casserole is making my mouth water!

  14. Chelsea says:

Very cute idea! I always find myself running around the kitchen looking for one of my oven mitts.

  15. Nancy says:

I hope that was a very thick sock! You wouldn’t want to get burned! I have improvised an impromptu oven mitt by using a thick kitchen towel folded over many times to make it very, very thick!

  16. My daughter has been known to cook hotdogs over our gas stove. lol
