My World just Crashed

grayOkay, well maybe that’s a little dramatic, but it sure felt like it for about 15 minutes. And now I’m just depressed and want to crawl in a hole. So what was so awful that could do this to me?

I’m almost too embarrassed to say it. Sigh… I keep trying to type it but it won’t come out, I just want to hit the red x and send this post away and maybe this problem will go away with it, but I know that’s not true. You’re probably thinking, just spit it out already!….

I found not one, one I could deal with, but TWO gray hairs on my head today. Well, they weren’t exactly gray, more like silver because I caught them beaming at me in the mirror thanks to the sun today. And they are thick and coarse like straw.

Seriously, this is devastating. Good grief, I’m ONLY 26…people in their 20′s are NOT suppose to be going gray or silver or whatever you want to call it. Now I feel terrible for poking fun at my husband who starting losing his hair and going gray shortly after we married in his early 20′s. It was funny when it happened to him, but THIS is not funny. It’s like a sign that my body is aging and slowly withering away towards death. I thought that didn’t happen until after 30. If I was 30 I could accept this, but I’m just not ready right now.

Someone please make me feel better! When did you start getting gray hair? Did they start multiplying right away? Should I start dying my hair again?

After finding them I panicked and plucked them right out of my head, root and all, then scoured my head for more. Right now they’re sitting in an envelope like a lost tooth. Do you think if I put them under my pillow the “hair fairy” will whisk them away and never return?

  1. It may make you feel better to know that I saw my first gray hair at age 11 (yep, not kidding!) and have had to dye my hair since my late twenties. It’s over half gray now, and I’m *only* 38… Sigh.

Welcome to the club! ;) And you have my sympathies… :)

  2. Ms. Latina says:

I felt the same way when I discovered my first two greys on my 30th Birthday. I was sulking in the bed when my then ever so understanding ex , who’s 6 ft 3 inches (I’m 5 ft 1), told me don’t worry hun you’ve had them for awhile and there are a ton more on top of your head! Talk about devastated! LOL

  3. I found my first at 30. Plucked it right out and haven’t seen another one since (I’m 31 now)

I think gray hair can look really cool but I wasn’t ready for it.

    HUGS!

  4. I know how you feel. In the last two years I have been getting a ton of gray hairs. I think it is the sign of the times and how stressed we all are. I feel your pain.

  5. Maureen says:

We all have grey hairs early in our family.. Trust me when I say this, There are worse things that could happen….Its tough, but it will be okay… and honestly when you start finding more and more you get to go to the beauty shop and the nice lady there will make them all go away..
Let me know if that grey hair fairy shows up… I have a bunch I will give her.

  6. Firefly says:

I hear you :) I found my first at 25 ugh…I called my Mom and had this whole depressing speech how I’m old and you know the worst…she just laughed and assured I’m not alone :)

So you are not alone :-D

  7. Lisa says:

I was 29 when I got my first one , I like you was devasted! I pulled them out right away ! They didnt show up much in my hair cause im blonde but they are so thick and coarse! The good thing is it could be worse and you can get rid of them. I think we are all lucky , well at least me that I dont have a head full of them with the stress we all have these days !

Cheer up girl it will all be okay !

  8. LOL!! I think I found my first gray hair when I was 24.

  9. Terry says:

I remember when I discovered my first grey hair.. It was on the playground and my gym teacher who was standing behind me said “Hey you have several grey hairs at the top of your head.” The reason she could see them was I was a short 12 years old. I went home and forced my mother to pluck them from my scalp. Now my son who is a young teen has them and he thinks they are “cool”. So do all his friends. It has become a family tradition. So relax and Breathe. Everything will be okay. :.)

  10. I think it is directly proportional to how many kids you have.

  11. Gena says:

I am dreading this moment! I am hoping to push it away for a few years. My DH has been going silver for a few years now. He’s only 28 and is now getting them in his chest hair.

  12. Suzanne says:

My first grey showed up sometime on my honeymoon from my first wedding. I didn’t even notice them, but a coworker did. It was when I was leaning over my paperwork that the cute 17 year old said “don’t move” and she plucked two WHITE hairs out of my head.

    I was 24.

It should have been a sign of what was ahead with the now ex husband, but my family genetics were stacked against me. At 42, my Mom had full grey and my Dad was 75% grey. I guess I should be happy that I’m only about 30% there. Wella and Sally Beauty supply are my good friends and come to visit every six weeks or so…

Too bad I can’t pull them out and leave them for the ‘hair fairy’!

  13. Debbie says:

LOL I was just complaining that I was turning 27 today lol.

  14. Jess NBP says:

Chris has the pepper look going on when he lets his hair get too long, then he buzzes it. I haven’t found any on my head yet but I have blonde hair that will end up either WHITE or grey, I’d like the white but then I’d have to color my hair a bit darker b.c my hair is a light brown.

BTW, love the new look. :)

  15. Claire says:

Okay I was like “OMG WHAT HAPPENED????” and was so worried..then saw the picture & squinted as I read like “wait a sec…” I was worried!!!
My mom started graying at like, 20..
My sis plucks hers or has me color them when she visits =X
Nothing a little tint cant cover mama ;-)

  16. Sarah Berry says:

I started getting gray hair in my earlier 20′s! Mine is also silver so at least it sparkles. Now at 29 I have lots of gray hair and just recently began coloring my hair. Just take a deep breath and remember it is not the end of the world!

  17. Stefanie says:

I know how you feel. I found a couple last year and wanted to cry! I haven’t seen any since but I know I will soon. Don’t worry hun, it’s just hair…it can be colored! It’s the wrinkles we have to worry about! lol

  18. SIgh. There is probably one more. I believe god gives you one for each child you have every couple of month.

but to brighten your day. You’ve been Fav Popped. You can grab your display code and register your pop for prizes here http://www.coolbabykid.com/2007/11/blog-pops-sweet-valentines-blog-treat.html

Thanks for the pop as well. It was my 1st. BIG SMILE :)

  19. Louise says:

I’m sure I have a lot but I’m blonde so I’d never notice. Honestly though I’m too scared to look.

  20. Bridgette says:

ONLY TWO?!? LOL! I started finding them quite early. Now that I am almost 35 (gulp), I actually have to color my hair to cover the gray. It’s crazy!

  21. JenniMac says:

I was 25 when the lady cutting my hair said…
“Oh, you look so young to have so many gray hair.”

Thanks a lot lady. No tip for you!

  22. Tracye says:

    I was FOUR YEARS OLD!!!

I was COMPLETELY gray by junior high, so was, of course, miss clairol-ing the heck out of it.

When I met Hubs, I had red hair, but I stopped coloring it. I just got sick of doing it. He LOVES it gray. But it’s really more silver than gray. It’s kind of sparkly. When I was a TV anchor, I had to start coloring it again, because it reflected too much of the studio lights, and with my super-white skin I was just toooooooo darn light for the cameras! I’ve gone back to color though.

Last night we were at a party, and one of Hub’s coworkers asked why my hair is more blonde now, when it used to be more gray! Duh!

    Thanks for the Blog Pop!

  23. renee says:

Don’t worry so much. Mine started not long after the first baby. They didn’t multiple to much on me, I can find them if I look, but it is not enough to start coloring my hair. Deep breath and relax. If you stress it may just cause more.LOL

  24. Christy says:

I was about 25 when I first noticed a gray hair, I pulled it, I didn’t care if that meant two would grow back or whatever the old wife’s tale is.. I’m 30 now and still have just a few stray ones here and there, and with a little dye… :)

  25. Amanda says:

I’ve been dying the gray away since 8yth grade. I was 14. My first gray showed up at 10. I’ve got you beat LOL.

  26. I’ve got them too. They are really thick and coarse and totally freak me out each time I find one. Don’t tell no one though. :P

  27. Laurie says:

Genetics, at least that’s what I was told. Ive been seeing them since my 30′s and well kids I stopped counting!

  28. Sarah says:

Maybe Trisha can confirm this for me but redheads like us don’t usually go gray. Wait that’s not helping is it? According to Proverbs gray hair is a crown of splendor. Maybe you should embrace it, chop it into a spiky cut and go edgy!

  29. Karen R says:

I started having gray hair in high school. It was fine with me until I turned 30. Then it wasn’t funny anymore and I’ve been coloring my hair ever since.

  30. Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting says:

OMG I’m so jealous! LOL If you only KNEW how many I have, and have had since age 19!!!! lol

  31. Allison says:

I’ve been plucking out a few stray gray hairs for about 2 years now, and I’m 28. I’ve got brown hair, but sometimes I used to think they were stray blonde “sunlights” HA! I don’t WANT to dye my hair, so I’m hoping I can make it and just go gray gracefully… my husband’s aunt has been all gray for years and she’s in her 40′s and looks great. I’d like to be that way. It doesn’t bother me as much since depite the stray gray hairs I’m still mistaken for a youngster — when I was TEACHING high school I often got mistaken for a student! But maybe it does have something to do with kids…I’ve got two now and my oldest is 2, and the gray hairs have been more frequent since he came around. ;)

  32. yzgirl4 says:

Don’t worry, I started in my early 20′s. I now have to dye my hair all the time!

  33. Baba says:

Speaking as one who is nearly all grey now, you get over it fast. But I still like to color my hair every now and then just for me.

  34. Yard and Villa says:

I found my first gray when I was 22…I thought that it was the worst thing in the world. Now I am 33 and I find them all the time, but I just cover them up and pretend like it never happened….lol

  35. Maggie M says:

As long as there is hair dye on the market, no one need know I’m gray! LOL
