Tony Hawk Ride for Wii Review

New from Activision Games…Tony Hawk RIDE for Wii, XBox 360 and PS3.

Tony Hawk: RIDE is THE new way to play. It gives a whole new meaning to game night by allowing the entire family to challenge one another to competitions that are as fun to watch as they are to play,” said Rob Kostich, head of marketing, licensed products, Activision Publishing, Inc. “It’s the perfect activity for the entire family this holiday season…and anytime of the year. – Tony Hawk, legendary pro skater

Honestly, I’ve never before seen such a game that was as physically involved as Tony Hawk Ride and we love it!

Cold weather has forced our son to pack up his skateboard for the next few months and this game has been there to feed his “Ollie” (a skateboard trick for those that don’t  know) addiction from the comfort of our living room. I don’t have to worry about skid marks on my floor (or broken bones) and he can keep practicing his moves while burning some energy.

The worst part of Tony Hawk Ride is the whole 2 minutes I had to watch my son wriggle with excitement during the initial skateboard calibration. Luckily, this only has to be done when new batteries are installed.

Speaking of calibration, the initial set up process was very easy. Each Tony Hawk Ride game comes with everything you need to starting gaming almost immediately. The box includes:

  • 1 Game Disc and Instructions
  • 1 Skateboard
  • 4 strips of Velcro for non-carpeted surfaces
  • 4 AA batteries
  • 1 sensor block

Within minutes the game was ready to go and with no instruction, my son was skateboarding like a pro semi-pro. Just like with any other skateboard, this game requires you to master balance and the freedom to express your own skateboarding technique.Check out how into the game my son got!

We tried the skateboard on our wood flooring with the Velcro and the rug carpet without the Velcro and found he was able to maneuver most easily on the rug. Either way you go, I would bet your kids (and adults) will have a lot of fun with this one. I even took a leap and tried out the RIDE for myself while my son got 20 minutes of pure laughter at my inability to skateboard and lack of skill.

But don’t just take my word for it, check out what Tony Hawk has to say about RIDE in this video clip and watch the Tony Hawk RIDE Bloggers Retreat footage to see some reactions from kids that have tried the game. For more information you can also see the official homepage of Tony Hawk RIDE, follow Tony Hawk on Twitter or Tony Hawk RIDE on twitter.

  1. WOW this sounds really cool. I am gonna have to check more into this. Might be getting my son Tevin this for his Wii for Christmas.

  2. Brandy says:

Oh as I said, my 5 year old is DROOLING over this game. Sadly Santa doesn’t have the elf power to get it to us on Christmas.

  3. Kasandria says:

OMG my son would absolutely go INSANE for this. How have I not seen that much about it? Thanks for the awesome review Cat!
    Kas

  4. nicole says:

My son would go ga ga over this. It’s on his Christmas wish list-but I’m not sure we’ll be able to swing it-so I’m thinking maybe for his birthday in March. He recently told me he wanted to make a vlog asking Tony Hawk and a few other guys like Pedro Rodriguez to teach him how to skateboard (he’s five).

  5. Lori (A Cowboy's Wife) says:

Oh man it looks like a LOT of fun!! Totally jealous right now and will have to add this to our list of Wii things to get. So much fun!

  6. Alakazam says:

It’s an awful game guys, every major reviewer has given it a poor score, don’t buy it, trust me on this.

Your kids will be immensely disappointed.

    • Cat says:

Well, I have to respectfully disagree with you and the other reviewers. As you can see from the video, my son (who is 8 by the way) absolutely loves the game. He’s not an adult, serious gamer, but a child that enjoys the ability to skateboard in our home in a safe environment.

From a parental perspective, I enjoy it as much as he does. There’s no violence and he’s getting physical activity.

    • Alakazam says:

I suppose children ARE easily amused,,,,,

    • Cat says:

      Yes sir, they are.

  7. j says:

yea this game is garbage. trust me i skate in real life and have played mostly every skateboard game. if you want a good skateboarding game get skate 2. much better trust me.

check reviews online this games not good. skate 1 or 2 are both much better.

shame really, looks good with the skateboard controller i know but it doesn’t work well.

  8. Erin says:

I think this looks cool for my boys and hubby…

  9. I bet my brothers would FLIP for this!

  10. Matt Cook says:

It is true that major sites have been slamming this game with bad reviews. However for a child this game is absolutely brilliant. For a hardcore gamer if may be rubbish but for a child this is a brilliant game. After all different people want different things in games. Children being one of them.

  11. Chris says:

I love this game. I played it at a friends house and thought it was really cool and different. So what if the major game sites slam it? Thats there opinion, you have to try it for yourself to see how it really is. Im 17 by the way, so the game is also great for teens. I also skateboard and although its very different from actual skating its great fun!

  12. Rhea says:

I think this looks perfect for my “thinks he’s a skater but really isn’t” 5 year old. He would love it. And he’s about as serious a gamer as any 5yo could be. ;) ~

  13. nicole says:

I think Tony Hawk is awesome, he’s a great role model for young children, and frankly if my kid is having fun and moving around while playing a video game-then that is what is important to me.

  14. tara says:

I think it looks like a lot of fun and something that may be in my son’s future!

  15. Jenn says:

I will be getting this for my kids … Thanks for a GREAT review… and I agree, my kids are just that.. KIDS and not pro skaters… they like to have fun! This looks FUN!

  16. Tiffany says:

He totally looked like he loved it! Wish my boys were a little older, I’m sure they’d love this!

  17. I bought this for my grandsons for Christmas. They want it real bad and they are 11 and 9 years of age. They love to skateboard so I didn’t want them to miss out on one the best games of the year as far as they are concerned.

  18. Ohh, this looks like something even I would enjoy!! Thanks for a great review!!

  19. My son who is almost 7 and his cousins love this game. They play it all of the time and get a some exercise which is wonderful.

This is one of those instances when the reviews CLEARLY were not written by children which is who I am pretty sure the game was intended for.

  20. trisha says:

seriously cat, i just busted out laughing.

  21. Brandi says:

All mine want this game. Even the twinners love their little skateboards. We plan on getting it for Christmas. It might not be the game for “serious skateboarders” or “old guys sitting in the basement” but for kiddos, it would be totally cool. And little man looked like he was having fun! Grunts and all!

  22. Stefanie says:

Looks like a fun game. My son would be all over that! Great gift idea for Christmas or his birthday next month. Thanks Cat! :)

  23. dRu says:

I am 31 and love this game. If you are looking for crazy 30 trick combos then yes you will b disappointed. I brought it to a party and everyone had a great time. Sure Skate 2 is a good game but it’s just DIFFERENT; can’t compare the two. My 2 cents.

  24. Whitney says:

My son isn’t old enough for this just yet, but I bet hubby & I would have fun with it. Your son is such a cutie!

  25. Monch says:

My son just got this for his 7th birthday this week and LOVES it! There was a line during the entire span of his 2 hour birthday party to play.

Quick question to anyone who has this game…the board does not seem to want to POWER OFF unless I take the batteries out (kinda a pain), ayone having this problem or have a solution?

  26. Popi says:

Hey Do NOT WASTE your money. Spend it on something better, unless they are 5 or under they will throw it under the bed. And any real skater will just hate it!

  27. Kim says:

My son would die to have this! It sounds like one heck of a good time. :)

  28. Jennifer H says:

Wow neat! I think any boy would love this as a gift!

  29. This looks awesome!

  30. Brandy says:

    Oh man that is awesome!!

  31. JDG says:

    I can’t get mine to calibrate, :(

  32. Jim says:

This game is rubbish if you’re gonna get something to get your kids active that involves games on the wii get wii sports or wii fit don’t get this piece of shovelware know as tony hawk ride.

And you people who want to buy this for your kid because you think it will get them active it will and it won’t

By it won’t I mean that your kids will just be pretty much standing there while the game does it for you(if your kids play on easy)

By it will I mean that your kids will either be to frustrated by the game or to bored by it and will probably go play outside.
