Wordless Wednesday – Facing Sadness

I often wondered, before having children, if they would look like me, in any way, shape or form. Looking at my husband, the answer was obvious. His bloodlines were strong, passing down the same obvious physical characteristics from father to child.

I had no hope.

Until Kaydence was born. Her golden wisps of matted hair resembled the very same golden locks I was born with. Her skin was freakishly pale in comparison to my husband’s deep tan, was so much like my own, yet her face…was the face of her father.

Watching her now, I realize, 1 out of 3 isn’t bad. Maybe it was a good thing the kids took after their father so much, he obviously had some beautiful features that attracted me. But, I will always still have a little sadness that beyond the small similarities Kaydence has to me, I will never be able to look at my children and see myself.

I understand your sadness. I have two that are the spitting image of their father. So much so that when I am out with my daughter that people ask if I adopted her. :-)

  2. But, maybe they take after you in other ways!

  3. Krista Peck says:

Aw, me too. We get fluffy & go through the pain & then they end up looking like THEM! I see only teenie bits of myself in my children, too.

  4. True…they don’t look exactly like you, now…but I am sure they will all grow to resemble your wonderful heart and personality. : )

  5. Rhea says:

She will take after you in other ways!! You will see it as they get older.

  6. Laura Rucker says:

I know how you feel. Only until recently has my almost 11-year-old started looking like me. Even then it’s in her expressions. I’m glad she’s taken after my husband since she got his long eyelashes, long fingers and a good brain.

Thanks for sharing your daughter’s cute picture. I love the curly hair…because I don’t have curly hair. I always wished I had.

  7. Although it may not be in looks, I am sure there are other traits where they resemble you!

  8. Louise says:

I don ‘t see myself in my children either but I do see my family in them.

  9. Kim says:

My younger two look just like me, but my first is his daddy made over. In pictures, you can notice similiar features though. They all have my nose and eyes.

    Her hair is gorgeous!

  10. I can see resemblances in both ways. I have alot of people that tell me both girls look like me but in all reality, I see Daddy. I think we trick ourselves a bit ;)

    • Henrietta says:

I agree, I often think my kids look like their dad but everyone swears their my spiting image. Perhaps they look more like you than you think Cat :)

  11. Totally know where you are coming from. My DH has strong genes also, those native genes are to strong. Now of my kids look like me. I had prayed and prayed that least one would have blue eyes. Nope all dark hair and dark eyes.

  12. Lynsey Jones says:

My youngest looks NOTHING like me… seriously I thought for a long time that I brought the wrong child home LOL But as she gets older she is actually looking more like me. Dont fret – they may grow into looking like Mama! =)

  13. Michelle says:

I actually think your son looks a lot like you! Obviously with darker skin and hair, but with your features.

My older two are my clones, but my youngest took after daddy a little bit. He was so happy…I hadn’t realized how sad he was that the older two didn’t look like him. It’s such a genetic gamble.

  14. Tiffany says:

I see you in her. And those curls. Oh those curls. I love them.

  15. Brandy says:

Aw I know that feeling even though I only have 1 lol. Sometimes Owen looks like me at that age and then other times just like his daddy lol.

  16. Kelly W says:

sometimes we pass on more than looks. It is so nice when you see them show some of your good traits. Maybe its your personality or temperament. But then again that can backfire when they show some of your bad traits (example in my case patience)

  17. April says:

I am DYING over your little girl’s curls…so precious! But I can totally relate Cat, not one of my 3 kiddos look like me, *I think so* but everyone thinks they look like their daddy!

  18. Totally understandable, but your children have inherited your strength and kindness in their hearts. I’ve always told my kids, “it doesn’t matter how you look on the outside – it’s what’s inside that matters.”

  19. All of my boys look like their dad so much it is crazy! I am lucky though, that my one and only daughter clearly looks like my family…a lot like me, but really she looks most like my mom and sister!

  20. Kayla says:

They may not resemble you, but they probably take after you in a different way!

  21. Love those curls, though…:)

She’s a beautiful girl and you have to think that there was several times over the last 2 yrs that she looked like you. Kids change so much over the years…YOU showed a baby picture not too long ago where she looked so much like you.

Faces are ever changing and she’s beautiful just like her Mama.
    CHIN UP CAT SMILE!

  23. Just wait until they get older girl. You’ll see resemblances, as will others. I’ve seen resemblances of you in different pics of your kids!

    Hugs to you girl :)

  24. Deborah says:

One out of three? It’s actually 2 of the three because she had light skin and your hair.

  25. My twins dont look like me or their dad. At all. Its very odd!

  26. Erin says:

too cute. I love the curls

  27. She has gorgeous hair! Maybe she’ll look more like you as she grows up, or will take after you in other ways :)

  28. Stefanie says:

What are you talking about? I see a lot of resemblances between you and Kaydee! And I also think that Emma looks just like you! You don’t give yourself enough credit hun…you are very pretty!

  29. My kids look alot like me, but I wished they would have gotten my wavy hair. Neither one did…they didn’t get my husband’s red hair either.

    Your children are adorable!

  30. Staci A says:

Seeing photos of your little ones, I can always see a little of both of you! I can understand your sadness though. I feel bad for my son-he managed to get my elf ears. Poor thing!

  31. noelle d says:

what a cute head of hair!!!!!!!

  32. Jayme says:

    Oh those curls, soooo sweet!
