However, they aren’t very good at detecting and telling you the difference in the metals you find. As such, BFO detectors are mostly used in really cheap metal detectors and aren’t used by professional and even mainstream hobbyists. However, many starter metal detection hobbyists make their own BFO detectors and do quite well with them. Great experience too.

3: PI Detectors.

Pulse Induction detectors work very similar to how radar in a warship might work. They send out pulses of RF energy (an active radio frequency) and listen out for any signals that bounce off it. PI detectors aren’t that high though for detecting the different types of metals. But they are great at finding metals that are very deep down in mineralized soils. Like the sandy beaches and shores or below salt water (underwater mainly).

4: TR Detectors.

Transmitter Receiver detectors are one of the oldest and first types of metal detection technologies that people could use. They work through an induction balance principle of detecting metal. They do work, and you can find metal with them, but you’ll probably end up digging something that you didn’t want to. As such most modern metal detectors don’t use this technology anymore.
