Finding quality time with your little ones

October 21, 2016 by admin

how-to-be-a-parentparenting

We would all benefit from a little more quality family time, that much is true. Indeed, we live in an era when replying to work emails at all hours, being available to take phone calls throughout mealtimes, and spending weekends planning DIY projects around conference calls and the odd snatched moment of family time is not only acceptable, but expected of us. Amongst all of those ‘to dos’ and ‘must dos’, where is there any time for the ‘should dos’ that have our families, and little ones, at their heart?

Spending quality time with your family isn’t just nice, or a break from the daily grind, it’s essential to your little one’s development, and will form the basis of your child’s ability to form and maintain relationships. It will also instill confidence and self-esteem, and teach him or her how to communicate with others. You may crave quality family time, but your child needs those moments – and we’re going to tell you how to make the most of them.

Top tips for enjoying quality time together

With everything else that you’ve got to fit into your day the prospect of finding quality family time can be a daunting one – but it really shouldn’t be. No one should dread spending time with their children or loved ones, feeling as though such moments need to be sandwiched between more ‘meaningful’ tasks, or, heaven forbid, regard quality family time as a wasted opportunity. These moments should be treasured forever; your children will only be young once, so set aside that cell phone, switch on your email’s auto-response, and prepare to make memories.

Sit on the floor

No, really. Spending time with your family doesn’t need to involve big gestures, or expensive days out – sometimes all your little ones want is your undivided attention, and for you to show interest in what they’re doing, be that sitting up for the first time in their baby activity center from Skiphop.com, pushing a new car along the floor, or rolling in ever-decreasing circles until they’re positively dizzy. Your child is a wonder, and those simple, uncomplicated moments are the best you’ll ever spend together. Make a promise to yourself that you’ll spend an hour each evening sat on the floor while your children play, or that you’ll engage with your baby’s bedtime routine at weekends. As they grow up will your children remember the specific places you went to, or the fact that you were there? So, be there whenever you can be.

Enjoy a movie

Despite being one of the very few activities during which no words are needed, family movie nights, or afternoons, are some of the best ways to spend quality time together; a little like a trip to the movie theater, but you won’t be charged an extortionate amount for the ticket or stress about your child’s inability to sit still for longer than five minutes. Whatever the weather is doing outside, family movie time is a great way to while away an afternoon, buried beneath a giant blanket eating popcorn or sweets from a plastic bucket. In addition, such an activity is a great way for parents to de-stress, and to rediscover movies that you loved as a child – watching princess movies and cartoons suddenly becomes socially acceptable again when you have kids.

Take a road trip

Sometimes the very best adventures are the spontaneous ones, so why not pack up a picnic, get into the car, and just drive? Perhaps you live within reach of a theme park, could make your way to the beach by lunchtime, or have always fancied heading into the mountains to enjoy the great outdoors. Jump in puddles, run through a pile of fallen leaves, or roll down a gigantic hill with your arms linked; whatever you do, there’s absolutely no need to be back by dinnertime. Indeed, who’s even keeping an eye on the schedule? Road trips, and the adventures they’ll inspire along the way, are fantastic for families needing some bonding time, and children will adore picking the music, playing car games, and asking whether you’re nearly there yet countless times an hour. Whether the windows are wound down or the heating’s turned up, your car is a vessel to take you into the unknown.

Create a schedule for your family’s quality time

If schedules and organization work for you then make them work for your family too. Rather than waiting for spare moments to present themselves take a pen and highlighter to your diary and create them. Too much of our lives are spent wondering “what if?” but your family shouldn’t have to be on the receiving end of such a notion. Whether you’re creating a recurring appointment each week, scheduling a special event such as a birthday or anniversary, or snapping up a free morning before work takes over, you are in charge of your time – be sure to give a slice of it to your little ones.

Whether you’re eating a meal together, taking the time to listen to your little ones’ as they discuss their favorite things, choosing nicknames for one another, or simply leaving your home-office door open so that the family may pop in and say ‘hello’ every now and again, finding quality time is easier than you think – and won’t require any kind of map. You see, quality time needn’t involve a lot of money, grand gestures of any kind, or even a plan; all your little ones need is you, and a sense of adventure that will transport them anywhere on any given day.

Toys Around The World

The world may be made up of different cultures and traditions, but we all give something to our children as toys. Some are unique to a particular culture; some can be found almost anywhere. Whatever toys we give our kids, we have our number one reason to do this – to make them happy.

Let us visit some educational toys in Australia and around the world and what our children can learn from them:

  • Matryoshka – this is the nesting dolls of Russia. This world famous doll is instantly recognizable as a Russian contribution to the world of toys. The majority of the doll’s theme is about family – the nested dolls inside forms a family when all are taken outside.

If you happen to have one, you can ask your child what they think of it. Ask them who they associate themselves with the dolls. If you have multiple matryoshkas, you may take all parts apart and ask your child to match it. Play matching could provide entertainment for hours.

  • Puppets – it is said that Ancient Greece and Ancient India practiced puppetry, with India’s Tamil literature, mentioned this around 2nd century BC. Wow, that’s ancient!

Today, we can make sock puppets with our kids. We can help them create multiple characters – complete with button-eyes and water coloured-bodies. Playing with sock puppets can foster imagination during play activity.

As an alternate, you can create stick puppets together. Cut out a circle, draw the eyes, nose, and mouth and paste it on a popsicle stick or at the top any empty bottle. You can cut the “dress” of the body and let your child colour them and paste it to the stick or bottle. Instant craft project and hours of play.

  • Kites – Ancient China were the first ones to create a kite. While the original intention of making the first kite is not for kid’s use, nowadays, we can see kites of different designs in parks and kite tournaments.

When I was still little, my friends would take a sheet of paper, fold it in the sides, and tie strings on each side and then run away – let our kites fly with us. I figured this is also a fun activity to do with my child, yours too. You can make the kite more personal by adding some design to the paper, let your kid’s imagination run wild. Then run around together, it will surely be fun.

  • Snakes and Ladders – another toy that originated in India. This toy, as a worldwide classic, can be played by multiple players. So there’s no limit to the fun this toy can bring.

You can include the dog, the vacuum, anything as playmates. Add to the fun; you can teach your child to count while moving the tokens around.

  • In Australia, with the diversity of insects and animals, you can take pictures of insects and animals on your phone and create an album of safe and unsafe animals. You can tell your kids which ones are safe to play with and to stay away from the dangerous ones.

Around the world, people are creating new toys for children and even for adults. Constantly improving in technological advances, toys are getting more and more sophisticated. While improvements are good to have, having fun and making memories together with your children are the better than techy gadgets and flashy new toys.

How to Spend Less Time With Tech and More Time With Your Kids

October 12, 2016 by admin

Your handheld technology is an every day tool that helps you engage with friends, work and connect with the rest of the world. Your smartphone is used so often that it feels like an extension of your body. However, when you’re a mom, it is important that your attention isn’t consumed by your technology. While in the presence of your kids, you must make sure that you don’t rely too heavily on your tech devices for entertainment, work projects or communication. Your kids need your attention, as it is an opportunity for them to engage with their number one role model. Here are some tips for how you can steer away from the never-ending distractions of technology and focus more on your children:

Tech Breaks

Take a look at your daily schedule and assess when you can take breaks from all of your devices. These tech-free time frames will allow you and your family uninterrupted face-to-face interaction. Rather than only having half of your attention focused on one another, you can engage in meaningful conversation or bond through a group activity. This sounds easy enough, but you must keep in mind that notifications on your phone won’t desist during these family times. You may receive emails from the school, text messages from friends or social media updates that will pull your attention away from your family. It is best that you put your phone away in a drawer or your bag while you’re on your tech break. Waiting an hour to respond to an email or text isn’t a big deal. Instead, your availability and attention should be dedicated to your kids during the time you spend together. Put up a family calendar where you can mark your tech-free time periods so everyone in the house can see.

Good Habits

Develop good habits that help you balance your interactions with your tech and your kids. Before you engage on your phone while with your child, let them know why your attention will be shortly drawn away from them. It is important they have an expectation that you will be engaged in a quick task, rather than feeling ignored. However, if you are constantly diverting your attention from them to your phone, they will feel like they aren’t as deserving of acknowledgement and interaction. If your child seems to need your attention while you’re on your phone, you should give it to them. You don’t have to completely shift gears, but at least provide acknowledgement such as, “I would love to give you my full attention in a moment. I have to finish this one task and then I can focus on you.” This will let your kid know that you care and also teach them how they can exercise patience and expectation management.

Fewer Notifications

Choose phones that offer settings allowing you to not be constantly interrupted during your time with your family. Your phone should be able to let you receive texts and updates silently, with a small vibration alert. If you have your phone volume on high for notifications and calls, the sound will be a terrible distraction. You can also arrange how you’d like to visually see your notifications. They can be a small banner that pops up then disappears, versus a list of trivial updates that will crowd your phone screen and pull your interest. The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge allows you to designate notifications to the edge of the phone to decrease distractions. It also has a specific Do Not Disturb setting that will let you program which notifications can come through and which ones to silence. This customizable option is more nuanced that muting your phone and is a great tool for staying in the moment with your kids, without missing out on any important calls or messages.

Creative Newborn Photography Ideas

September 22, 2016 by admin

newborn

Having a baby is one of the most joyous occasions in a parent’s life. It is becoming increasingly popular for parents to arrange photo shoots in order to preserve this stage of their child’s life for posterity. These photographs can then be shared with friends and relatives so that they can share the joy of the moment.

Whilst some people prefer very straightforward baby photos, why not consider getting a little creative with the shots? This can potentially make the photographs more memorable and exciting and will certainly give family and friends something to marvel over when they see the end results.

Read this guide for some creative baby photo ideas from Kristy Mannix Photography which will inspire parents to put their special little one in front of a camera lens.

Nature

Having photographs against a plain background in a studio can be a little uninspiring and may lead to photographs which don’t stick in the memory as much as they could. Instead, why not have an outdoor photo shoot? Being in a natural environment will create some stunning backdrops for the photographs. Make sure to choose a day which isn’t too cold or the baby could become ill. These types of shots are best in the spring or summer when the weather is more agreeable and all the trees and flowers are in full bloom.

The baby will have a fantastic day outdoors in the fresh air, and parents will be able to have a series of extremely memorable shots taken against a backdrop of blue sky and bright sunshine. Choose different locations such as fields and streams to provide a range of settings for the photographs.

Dressing Up

Photo shoots with Kristy Mannix Photography are a great excuse for having the baby dressed up in smart outfits. It could be a good idea to have some special clothes custom made for the occasion so that they look extremely smart. There is no need to spend lots of money because there are many smart clothes available for an extremely reasonable price. Choose different outfits for separate photos so that the pictures end up being diverse.

Photoshopped Backgrounds

Creative backgrounds can make photos stand out. Different patterns or designs can be photoshopped into the background so that the baby becomes framed in different colours or patterns.

Comparison Photographs

Parents may wish to compare their baby to themselves when they were at the same age. Find old pictures which could be printed alongside the current photographs of the newborn baby. This will allow parents to study the similarities and differences of their baby against themselves when they were newborns. These photographs could stir up sentimental feelings in other relatives, particularly the grandparents of the newborn child.

There are dozens of other ways in which baby photos can be made to look unique. The only limit to this is the imagination of the parents and of the photographer. Why not start planning a creative photoshoot for a newborn baby today?

Math Apps for Kindergarteners That Make Math Fun

September 13, 2016 by admin

For too many children math is something scary or uninteresting. Math is an essential part of life, is absolutely necessary for future careers and job training, and besides this, math is fun and rich and rewarding. So how do we reverse the all too common distaste for math? We start young. And one of the most powerful tools for making math fun for children is math apps for kindergarteners.

Math apps for kindergarteners come in all shapes and sizes (get the pun there?), but what’s most important is finding games that kids actually want to play. The best math apps for kindergarten disguise repetition of cognitive basics in fun games and activities. Colorful graphics, active play (think touch and tap commands), and music all also help in contributing to math apps for toddlers that not only work in teaching math but teach kids that math can be a fun game.

Preschool EduMath 1 and Preschool EduMath 2 are two of the best math apps for kindergarteners on the market now. They’ve won the Parents’ Choice Award for best toddler games as well as numerous recognition on kindergarten teacher and parents blogs. The games are totally customizable, highly creative, effective, child safe, and teach kids everything from counting, numbers, shapes, sizes, to more concept learning skills like patterns, organization, telling time, and much more.

Preschool EduMath 1 and Preschool EduMath 2 are available (with limited game accessibility) for free and the full versions are very affordable. Cubic Frog® Apps makes some of the best toddler educational games around, and these two free math apps for kindergarteners are no exception.

No matter which math apps you choose for your kindergartener or your kindergarten classroom, the most important part is showing children math is fun. By building math confidence at a young age your set up toddlers to be able to conquer math at any and every age.
