Travelling is a wonderful time for laughter, bonding and festivities. An opportunity to learn new things, see different cultures and connect with different people. Whether it be on the beach, a new city, trekking on the mountains or star gazing in the wild, traveling is one of the best de-stressors when you need to take a time out. And what better way to spend it with your family.

No matter how far you are away from home, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a must, and yoga is proof that exercise on-the-go is not difficult. Here are simple ways to do just that:

1. Bring your props with you


Yoga props don’t consume too much space in your luggage, just bring your mat with you! A big travel mat rolled on your bag would indeed serve as a reminder that it’s time to squeeze in some exercise hours on your vacation but it might just add up a wee amount of weighing.

As with any travel bit, exploring the local yoga studios are part of the vacation itself. Your hotel might just have their own yoga studio for you to enjoy. Perhaps, you will find a Yogi instructor giving free classes on the town’s plaza where you can meet other families practicing yoga themselves. Or maybe there’s a studio beside the famous restaurant you are dying to try. In any case, search for Yoga practice opportunities before you travel.

3. Make an itinerary and make yoga part of it

So, your youngest wants to go to the waterpark and your eldest wants to check out the museum; your hair is thinning out at the thought of having not enough time to go to all of these places but you want everyone to be happy, too. Well, the best plan is to make a plan. Find time before your travel to search for the noteworthy tourist’s spots, find the perfect schedule and you’re good to go. While you’re at it, keep an eye out for opportunities to practice yoga as well.

If you find yourself on vacation in the woods, make sure you pack light and bring your mobile phone with you in the case of emergencies and in the case of yoga. 5. Yoga Retreat

Have you ever considered going on a retreat? How about a yoga retreat for your next vacation? Morocco, Thailand, and Cambodia offer yoga retreats all year round. Some even offer a family yoga retreat which teaches you poses that can practice your little kid. Not only is this a good husband and wife quiet time, but it can also be one of the most memorable bonding experiences you will have with your children. Do not be intimidated by silent yoga retreats as this is a whole new level of experience altogether.

6. Meditate

Travelling, though enjoyable for everyone, can also be quite tiring. Take a few minutes out of your day to just practice your breathing. The best times are when you are waiting for your flight, aboard your plane and while traveling on land to your destination. It need not be a complicated practice as you can just sit there, block the surroundings and just breathe. You can turn it into a game for your kids, everyone will enjoy it.

7. Do not forget to cleanse

Yoga is a cleansing of the mind, spirit and the body. Make sure you get your daily, if not weekly, dose of it. And while you’re at it, take advantage of your time while on vacation; reset your body by getting that 8 hours of sleep. Pick your food thoroughly– an option you don’t usually have when you only have an hour for lunch at work. Do some light reading. Anything that would help you reach that state of relaxation where both your mind and body is at rest.
Be it on vacation or at the comfort of your own home, there’s plenty of yoga to go around. Share the experiences with your family and new friends, ask them to join and eventually, build a community of yogis eager to practice even when they’re away from home.

The Building Blocks of Financial Success: Teaching your Kids How to Handle Credit

Choosing the right ways to prepare your teen for the financial responsibilities of adulthood can be daunting. Yet studies show that children who are taught strong financial habits while they’re still young are more likely to grow up to be savvy with their money.

A crucial part of learning financial independence is building good credit. Your teen’s credit score could be what helps them qualify for loans, better interest rates, auto insurance, rental applications, and even some types of employment.

There are plenty of tricks and tactics you can try, but in reality building up your teen’s credit is all about teaching them to be responsible with their money. When they learn financial responsibility, the result is that they’ll start building good credit.

Here are some tips for teaching your kids to handle credit wisely.

Add Your Teen as an Authorized User

Add your young adult as an authorized user on your credit card. Teach them about spending and payment responsibilities. Explain the charges on your credit card statement and add up the amounts they’ve accrued on your credit card account.

It’s normal for some teens to go crazy with spending the first time they get a credit card, but they need to understand the importance of repaying what they spend. Help them find positive ways to pay off the amounts they spend.

Choose the Right Card

If your teen has been responsible with spending and repaying the debts incurred as an authorized user on your credit card, encourage them to apply for a card of their own. Compare the different types of credit cards available and choose the right one to suit your young adult’s needs.

Check things like fees, interest charges, rewards programs, and other options. In some cases, a student credit card can be ideal. In other cases, it may be wise to choose a credit card with a low annual fee that offers interest-free days on purchases.

Avoid Temptation

Even teens can be inundated with credit card offers from banks, so it’s important to explain the importance of choosing the right card. Your teen also needs to realize that it’s not wise to accept all of those offers that come in from the banks.

Too many inquiries showing on a credit report can cause your teen’s credit score to suffer. No matter how many offers arrive from the bank, encourage your teen to avoid the temptation to sign up for all of them.

Teach Responsible Card Management

Let your teen know it’s okay to use the credit card for small purchases, as this can help build up their credit. Small recurring expenses are also okay to put onto the credit card, such as Netflix subscriptions or groceries. However, you also need to explain the importance of repaying the amounts spent in full each month.

When it’s time for your teen to apply for student loans or other forms of credit, having a credit card statement showing no late payments goes a long way to establishing their level of financial responsibility.

School Daze: Smartphone Apps to Keep Your Kids on Track

21st-century kids are busy, busy, busy. A combination of homework, after school activities, at-home chores and social obligations can be hard to manage. Good thing there are some great smartphone apps that parents and kids can use to stay on track. In the interest of happy futures for everyone, we’re pleased to present some of the top Android apps for parents and kids.

Study smarter, not harder

An innovative app called StudyBlue facilitates the crowdsource creation of study guides for high school students and college scholars. Classmates and teachers can use StudyBlue to build flashcards and shared notes. Available for iOS and Android, this handy homework app is completely compatible with Evernote. The free version is very effective. Upgraded versions cost less than ten bucks a month and are worth the cost, advises Raising Arizona Kids magazine.

Speaking of Evernote… Photos, web pages, written content, and memoranda may be easily organized with Evernote. Students use Evernote to put together customized notebooks that may be shared or exported. Synchronizing editable notes projects is simple and quick with this excellent app for Android, Windows and iOS devices. The bare-bones version is free. For additional storage and more uploads, go for a paid plan.

Students can share audio notes via phone call and save them for future reference with Call Recorder for Me from Apalon. This cool Android app is legal to use, as long as both parties to the call know that it’s being recorded. For after-school homework groups, Skype is fun and easy to use. Parents might wish to monitor their students’ video chat time, however, because it’s easy for kids to use Skype for goofing off, too.

MyHomework for Apple and Android helps kids track homework assignments and upcoming examinations. Teachers who use the app can upload study files and test scores and remind students to study for tests. Parents may monitor the app to provide additional incentives that keep kids focused.

Reading and rewards

Kids who log into Biblionasium may find it easier to stay up to date with classroom reading assignments. The free dot com site facilitates communication between parents and teachers and offers incentives for completed reading assignment logs. Biblionasium also offers a search feature to help parents and kids find age appropriate reading material for after school fun.

Organize family meetings and events

Virtually every family member can use Google Calendar to manage their time. With a short learning curve, this free app lets parents and kids maintain individual calendars with color coding to emphasize super important upcoming events. The app can be synchronized across all platforms and devices and is one of the best methods of staying on track, says Learning Liftoff magazine.

Being a kid can be even more fun when time and efforts are organized. Parents who help their kids stay on track reap the rewards of happy, well-adjusted students. Try a few of these apps to see which ones work best for you and your kids.

Why You Should Encourage Your Kids to Play Sports

With kids today spending so much time hunched over tablets, Gameboys and computers, it can be a constant battle to ensure that they are getting enough physical activity.  One thing that many parents do is to enroll their children in organized sports.  Whether your child ends up playing varsity football like Mack Prioleau or simply develops a lifelong appreciation for an active lifestyle, there are many benefits that come from encouraging your kids to participate in sports. Here are just a few.

Cardiovascular and Muscle Strength

An obvious benefit that comes with being involved in sports is the impact on the overall health of your kids.  A generation ago, kids would have been outside running around for hours every day.  Now, they spend very little time engaged in active play, which makes the time spent play sports even more important.  No matter what sport they enjoy, they will spend time developing their cardiovascular health and muscle strength as a result of running, jumping, hitting or swimming.

Coordination and Flexibility

While studies have shown that computer games can contribute to the development of fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination, there is no substitute for sports as a way to bring these skills into the real world.  In addition to developing fine motor skills, sports also encourage the development of gross motor skills that can only come from moving your body through space. And no matter what sport your child enjoys, flexibility and mobility will benefit as well.

Discipline and perseverance

As children gain skills in their chosen sport, there will come a time when they want to continue to improve their abilities but they find that it no longer comes as easily or naturally as the basic skills did.  This means that children learn that in order to improve, they must be prepared to put in the effort to practice.  They will also learn that this comes with sacrifice – in order to practice, there will be times when the child will have to make a choice between practicing and another activity.  They also learn that even though not everything may come easily, there are small improvements that they can observe and build on every day, thus teaching the value of perseverance and patience. The sense of accomplishment that they can enjoy as they achieve their goals will reinforce the value of hard work.

Sportsmanship

Whether your child plays a team sport or an individual sport, they will need to internalize the norms of good sportsmanship, which include values of fair play, the importance of following rules, of working with others, and of being both gracious winners and losers. The ritual of players shaking hands and saying “good game” after a competitive match underscores everything that is good about sportsmanship and models positive values that your child can take into adulthood.

Teaching Styles at Sunday School

If you are considering high school ministry, or other forms of Sunday school, you will must first learn to understand the different teaching styles. There are two types of styles to choose from generally, being small group or master teacher format. It is important that you learn the difference between these two options, so that you choose the one that is right for you.

Master Teacher Format

You may feel that something called “master teacher” is quite intimidating. After all, becoming a master takes a whole lot of pressure, work, and focus. In reality, however, being a master teacher means that you will work with the whole student ministry, being a large format. This could be high school ministry, for instance, whereby you could potentially work with every child within that high school. During your cases, however, you will be the sole teacher and spend the first quarter of your lesson introducing the subject, after which the children will be divided into groups, usually by gender and age, and they will then work independently on the subject, facilitated by yourself.

Small Group Format

With small group format schooling, you are likely to work specifically in a Sunday school. All your students will be in smaller groups, and you get to decide how to divide them. You will not just teach them, but encourage discussion and debate. This is the format seen in almost every church across the country.

Which One Is Better?

You will be happy to know that there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to teaching styles. It all depends on where you teach, and what your church expects the children to learn. It also depends on what you are most comfortable with yourself. If you have been used to delivering education using a small group style, and you are suddenly expected to become a master teacher, you may struggle with that to a degree. Similarly, if the church you work for has always offered master teacher styles, you shouldn’t suddenly decide to switch to small group teaching. Unfortunately, you are unlikely to have the flexibility to go from one style to the other while remaining within the same church, in other words. However, you do have the opportunity to switch your style if you were to teach at different high school ministries or different Sunday schools.

At the end of the day, deciding between the two formats is something you need to do based on your personal preferences, and based on the preferences of your church, or the school itself. Remember that you are doing the work of the Lord, and you will not be doing anything wrong by choosing one style or another. The difference is in method of delivery, not in the opportunity to give children the ability to get closer to God, or to increase their understanding of His teachings. That is what truly matters, after all, and not the method in which you are able to achieve this.
