For busy moms, it can seem impossible to complete a full beauty routine that helps you look and feel your best. Complicated skincare and multi-step makeup routines might be out of the question for you when getting ready for work or in between obligations with your kids, which can result in you lacking confidence throughout the day. While it’s true that no one needs an extravagant hair or makeup routine to look beautiful, taking the time to complete the ritual of getting ready can be a means of self-care, and, let’s be honest, when you look good, you feel good. Here are some ways to simplify your beauty routine, so you can look good and make it out the door in time  – even on your busiest days.

1. Use Multipurpose Products

Using beauty products that serve more than one necessary purpose can save you time (and money). For example, a moisturizing primer does the job of two important things: hydrating your skin and giving the rest of your makeup staying power. Tinted moisturizer can give you a boost of hydration and replace foundation,  and some of them come with SPF, so you can skip that step as well.

2. Style While You Sleep

To cut down on styling time in the morning, use a tool that will style or set your hair overnight. For easy overnight curls, try putting your hair in rollers or a heatless curling device before bed. If your hair is straight or already in the style you desire, put it in a silk bonnet or low ponytail to protect it while you sleep. All you will need to do is take out the tool and give your hair a quick brush in the morning, and you’ll be ready to go! Plus, this will give your hair a much needed break from heat styling, making it healthier over time.

3. Take Your Morning Routine on the Go

If you struggle to find the time to get ready in the morning alongside all of your other responsibilities, you are not alone. If you commute via public transportation or a carpool, or you have downtime once you get to the office in the morning, consider packing a few products to take with you. Getting ready on the way or once you are at work is a great way to maximize your time and ensure you can do everything you need.

Self-Care Activities Parents Should Prioritize

When you’re a parent with just one or multiple kids, you can start experiencing the feeling of burnout quite often. Keeping up with those little humans is stressful, tiring, and takes away a lot of the time you used to spend on yourself.

As a parent, it isn’t only important for you to be there for your kids, but it’s also essential to take time for your own needs. You can’t be a great parent if you don’t take care of yourself as well.

How does a parent find time for themselves? Below are some realistic self-care activities for a parent’s busy lifestyle that will help you feel re-energized and better connected with yourself.

Get Social with Other Adults

Spending all of your time around children can be exhausting. Many parents crave adult interaction, especially when they stay home all day with their kids.

One form of self-care is to prioritize these adult-only meetings. Every other week, make it a point to get together with adult friends without the kids or join a book club. Anything that gets you out of the house and kid-free will do wonders for your mental health.

Do Something You Enjoy

Before you had children, what kinds of activities made you happy? Make time to do something that you truly enjoy when you’re starting to feel overwhelmed.

Maybe you enjoy doing home crafts, going for a run, or making a certain meal or dessert. Try to do one thing that makes you happy when you can. Don’t say you don’t have time; you have to make the time.

Pamper Yourself

When we picture self-care, most of us think about going for a facial or getting nails done. This is an excellent form of self-care and can be a small escape from your everyday life. Schedule your appointment at a medical spa such as the one at the Institute of Natural Health and choose from a variety of self-care services.

Remember, when you look good, you feel good. This is the perfect opportunity to relax a bit while improving or maintaining your appearance.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

It’s easy to get caught up in the monotony of our everyday lives and daily routines. Sometimes we forget just how great we have it. To remind yourself of everything you appreciate about your life, try keeping a gratitude journal. Some people choose to write in it every morning, while others only write when they need the reminder. No matter when you use it, it’s a great way to stay grounded and realize just how wonderful your life truly is.

Get Out in Nature

Spending some time in nature can be a total reset for your mood and outlook for the days ahead. Breathe in some fresh air while your kids play at the park or go for a walk with lots of greenery around. Avoid using your phone during this time so you can really appreciate the beauty of nature and experience the calming effect it offers.

5 ingredients that should not be in your baby’s organic formula

When choosing baby formula for your baby, the first thing you should pay attention to is the product’s composition, especially ingredients to avoid in it. Many parents prefer organic formula as a source of clean ingredients in a baby’s diet.

What ingredients should not be in the organic formula?

1. Sugar in baby formula

Sugar is a hazardous product for babies and toddlers. It was found that sugar causes children to be deficient in B vitamins, which are extremely important for babies’ digestion and their growing bodies.

2. Soy

There are debates about the benefits and harms of soy in baby formula. But one thing is clear: baby food should not contain genetically modified soy!

Natural soy can be used in a baby’s diet only as a therapeutic measure and prescribed by the pediatrician.

3. Palm Oil

Unfortunately, palm oil is prevalent in baby food production, mainly because it contains palmitic acid found in mother’s milk. At the same time, the palmitic acid molecule of breast milk is structurally different from that of palm oil. This acid in palm oil binds with calcium, making it insoluble soap in the baby’s stomach, which is quite dangerous, leading to colic and constipation.

4. Gluten

Many moms, of course, know that baby food should never contain gluten. What is wrong with this plant protein, which is found in most grains? This substance is basically poorly broken down in the body of some children, which can provoke the development of Celiac disease.

5. Phytin

Phytin is a very unnecessary substance for babies – substances that interfere with the absorption of calcium, salts, and vitamin D. The problem is that phytin contains phosphorus. This substance binds calcium salts, not allowing them to be absorbed.

Video Game Tips for Oblivious Parents

Your child often spends time clicking buttons on a controller and talking to their friends online. What are they up to? They must be playing their “Xstation 64” again. Video games have gotten a bad wrap in the past, but having been out for several decades, many have come around to them, though there are still misconceptions and those who are less aware of current gaming trends (which is understandable, as video games aren’t for everyone). By utilizing audience segmentation, many gaming companies tailor their games for specific audiences based on age, gender, and countless other factors.

Current statistics show that, while gaming is not exclusive to younger audiences, twenty percent of gamers in the United States in 2021 are under the age of 18. Because so many children and teens are playing video games in today’s day and age, it’s important to stay informed of their activities. This doesn’t mean you have to monitor everything your child is doing on their gaming device, but keeping yourself aware of their actions is a good rule of thumb. But what is there to know?

ESRB Ratings

Just like movies, video games have their own rating system that tells you if it is appropriate for the age of the player, which can be found on the box of a game or online. If you do a majority of the game buying, this might help you decide whether to let your child play a certain game or not. “E” stands for “Everyone,” and is essentially your “G” or “PG,” if movie terms help you understand, while “T” for “Teen” is equivalent to “PG-13,” and “M” for “Mature” being your “R” rating. Games can vary on content, so you might need to research specific games to see how each of them stack up, but this is a good starting point. If your child is only nine but you allow them to watch PG-13 movies, letting them play a game that is rated “T” might not be a big deal, but you might not want them playing “Grand Theft Auto” for a while.

Microtransactions

Games have changed a lot since the early days of Mario. Nowadays, many games have microtransactions, which are virtual in-game purchases one can make via credit card or external scratch card purchases. Does your kid talk about something called “Fortnite” frequently? This is one of many games that contain microtransactions. Do they play a lot of “Madden NFL”? Same thing. While these microtransactions are not dangerous alone, and the occasional purchase might not matter, if your credit card is linked with any account your child is playing on they could potentially use it to buy virtual goods.

Don’t be alarmed, doesn’t have to be an issue as long as your child understands that a credit card is not a bottomless well of money. You can also tell them that if there is something they want, they need to ask you first. If they are too young to understand this, or if you would rather not entrust them with your money, simply disconnect your card from their game console or avoid games with these features. This doesn’t mean you have to cut them off from ever playing another game, but you also don’t want to check your statement one month only to find a thousand-dollar bill waiting for you.

Watch the Clock

Contrary to popular belief, video games will not rot your child’s brain; in fact, studies have shown that playing them can actually prove beneficial for developing thinking patterns and hand-eye coordination. That being said, it’s understandable that parents don’t want their children sitting in front of a screen for hours upon hours each day. It might be wise to limit them to a certain amount of time each day during the week, such as one to two hours–perhaps they can play longer on the weekend if you so choose to let them.

As long as they are getting their homework and chores done and aren’t developing an addictive habit, there is nothing wrong with allowing them to play otherwise. They might ask for ten more minutes, or to let them finish a match with their friends if they are online and in the middle of a game, and this is fine, just be sure that they are not overextending their reach and that you both have a mutual understanding of fair play.

Hopefully, these tips will shed some light on the world of gaming for parents with children who frequently indulge in them. Games have allowed many to experience unique ways of storytelling, interact with their friends, and find comfort, especially during the pandemic. There have been many studies over a decade long that have determined that video games do not elicit violent tendencies or rot brains, and are simply a hobby that acts as an entertaining stress relief, no different than reading a book or watching a movie, but at the end of the day, it’s your household.

If you’re fine with letting your children play video games freely or with restrictions, that’s totally okay; if you would rather they didn’t play them and prefer that they instead spend the time doing other activities, that’s well within your right as well. Regardless, it’s good to stay informed and in touch with your children’s interests and activities, whether that be on a console, tablet, or out at the park.

Everything You Need to Know About Getting Sleep as a New Parent

Bringing home a baby is one of the greatest joys you will ever experience in life. You’ve just created a beautiful miracle and are ready to raise this baby with your values and happy memories. While you’re glowing in the glory of welcoming the new addition to your family, in the back of your mind you’re worrying about the lack of sleep you’ll have over the next few months.

It isn’t easy raising a baby, especially as a new parent. Luckily, there are great techniques and tips to help you get the sleep you need to take care of your newborn baby.

Sleep While the Baby Sleeps

It’s the oldest tip in the book for new parents, but it’s effective. Whenever the baby falls asleep you have the chance to grab a few good moments of sleep and relaxation. Even if you can’t fall asleep it’s a good idea to lie down and close your eyes for a bit to build up your energy again.

Create a Comfortable Sleep Environment

When you do have the chance to sleep, make sure it’s in a comfortable environment. Clean your bedroom and take out all of the clutter that can distract you and remind you of things you must do later. Your environment should be calm, dark, and sleep inducing.

Also create a comfortable sleep environment for the baby. Make sure he or she has a quiet room with a comfortable temperature to help them fall and stay asleep.

Practice Good Sleep Habits

Just like how we practice good habits in the shower and for our teeth, it’s important to have good habits when it comes to sleep. The three most effective sleep practices include:

  • No caffeine in the afternoon
  • No electronics an hour before bed
  • Create a sleep schedule

It’s important that you don’t rely on caffeine to stay awake. It dehydrates you and too much can increase anxiety.

Instead of scrolling through your phone, answering emails, or watching television, try reading a book or listening to a podcast before you go to sleep.

Lastly, while having a sleep schedule isn’t easy with a newborn, trying to stay consistent when you wake up and go to sleep can help you tremendously as a new parent.

Leave the Chores

You don’t have to be perfect. Every new parent is going to have all of their attention on taking care of their baby. If you leave a sink full of dirty dishes or a load of laundry in the dryer for tomorrow, nobody is going to judge you. Don’t over exert yourself trying to keep a clean house if it means sacrificing sleep.

Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It isn’t easy being a new parent and you deserve to have some help. Whether you ask your partner, friends, family members, or even sign up for baby coaching lessons, getting the help you need is essential when raising a newborn. Getting help means you can focus more on your baby and create the best life possible.
