BLDG 92

This museum, which pays homage to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, is located in what used to be a military residence in this shipbuilding center. At its peak during the Second World War, the Brooklyn Navy Yard employed nearly 70,000 people. This museum features exhibits of famous ships like the USS Monitor and the USS Arizona.

Both of these ships were constructed in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, along with countless others. As you journey through this museum, you will hear little-known stories about how many people of color helped during the building and repair of these ships.

The Panorama of the City of New York

Are you interested in seeing a nearly 10,000 square-foot model of New York City? If so, then a visit to the Panorama of the City of New York is in order. This model allows visitors to examine every inch of the four Boroughs like never before. There is a large balcony in this museum that allows visitors to get a bird’s eye view of this model.

The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

The property known as the Bartow-Pell mansion dates back to the early 17th century. Its owner, Thomas Pell is famous for signing a treaty with Siwanoy Indians for the purchase of the Bronx borough. This residence is located in Pelham Bay Park and is surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful foliage.

In 1888, the City of New York purchased this property and began updating it. Taking a tour of this property will allow you to see the carriage house and the gorgeous formal gardens on the property.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center

This former home for retired sailors is one of the most popular attractions on Staten Island. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center is spread out across 83 acres of land. The center is surrounded by cobblestone streets, Victorian homes and a large botanical garden.

While there, be sure to visit the Chinese Scholar’s Garden. This garden features large rocks that resemble formations described by in writings by Confucian and Taoist monks. There is also a bamboo forest that has a large Koi-filled pond.

The Woolworth Building

The Woolworth Building is one of New York City’s tallest structures. When it was completed in 1913, it was actually the tallest building in the city. During the opening of this building, President Woodrow Wilson turned on the first light switch.

New York City is filled with interesting and entertaining attractions. Getting out and exploring while on vacation in this city is the best way to have a completely unique experience.

How to Make Your Child More Independent

Children seem to grow up so fast, but there comes a time when you can use their help with some of their jobs. Getting dressed, making their breakfast or brushing their teeth are just some of the things you can let your child do as they grow older. Teaching them that they can be more independent can be tricky as they might like you doing things for them. Here are a few tips on making your child more independent.

Give Your Child Warning

To start, you don’t want to spring the idea of doing things on their own as this may make them anxious and feel as if they have done something wrong. Tell them a few days in advance that you think they are ok to start doing a few things by themselves. Start with one job at first and when they have mastered that, move onto the next one. Soon, they will be doing many different things.

Make a List

Think about what things they can do on their own as they grow older. This list can include more complicated things, but at first, you just want to give them easy jobs. It is also a good idea to ask your child what they would like to do on their own; it will make them feel part of the process and give them the encouragement to do it.

Make Time

When your child starts to do things for themselves, especially at the beginning, they are going to take more time then when you do it for them. For this reason, you need to allow more time for them and try not to rush them, if you do, they will get upset and might not want to do it again. See how much time it takes them to do certain things and build that extra time into your morning routine.

Don’t Expect Perfection

Your child will not be good at the things they do in the beginning, they may spill their cereal or not brush their hair properly, but that’s ok, allow them to make mistakes and try not to clear things away while they are still around. How to Avoid the Pain and Misery of “Computer Elbow”

If you’re a regular visitor to 3KidsandUs.com, then you hopefully know that it’s run by a family of go-getters who said goodbye to the corporate jungle and embraced life as digital nomads (and teach others to do the same!) Indeed, all we basically need is a laptop and access to the ‘net, and we can be as productive as folks in Fortune 500 enterprises — and much, much happier.

However, just like any other lifestyle choice, there are rewards and risks. And when it comes to the latter, one thing that almost everyone has to watch out for these days — but especially fellow digital nomads who spend hours a day typing and clicking — is a condition known as computer elbow.

Like it’s more familiar cousin tennis elbow, computer elbow is marked by the onset of pain in the fingers, hands and/or arms; especially (but not exclusively) the elbows. The bad news is that for a lot of people, computer elbow to some degree is unavoidable since they type and click all day — and sometimes, all night!

The good news, however, is that in most cases computer elbow can be reversed over time. Here’s the game plan:

  • Take a break! Yes, trust me: I know this is easier said than done. But time is the greatest healer, and your weary, aching fingers, wrists, forearms and (of course) elbow will thank you. Heck, even jet airplanes need rest from time to time.
  • Loosen up your taught, cold muscles and tendons prior to heading onto the digital landscape. Try this: extend your arm in front of you, and place the back of your hand against the wall (with fingers pointed to the side). Then, straighten your elbow and press against the wall. Hold this pose for a minute. This is a great way to stretch out your wrist. Just remember to do this gently, and immediately stop at the first sign of pain. It should feel good!
  • Use ice to reduce swelling and diminish pain. You can also alternate between hot and cold to increase blood circulation (about 5-10 minutes of cold, then 5-10 minutes of hot, repeated 2-3 times or as desired).

What’s more, your gear — or lack thereof — may be part of the problem. Don’t raise the back of your keyboard, keep your shoulders relaxed as you type, and use a wrist pad. Yes, I know it’s not all that convenient to lug one around, but it’s the lesser of two evils if it helps keep computer elbow at bay!

Some Final Advice

If the pain in your fingers, wrist, forearm and/or elbow persists — and especially if it worsens — then don’t ignore it: it’s not going to get better, it’s going to get worse. Speak with your doctor, who may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for a deeper look.
