American Auto Shield Reviews – Things to Think About When Planning a Road Trip

September 27, 2017 by admin

If you are planning a road trip soon then you need to start spending some time on ensuring that you are fully prepared and planned for your upcoming adventure. I love nothing more than getting my family in the car and heading off for pastures unknown and over the years I have managed to get our preparation down to a fine art.

I thought then, that I would put together this list of things that you need to ensure that you have planned for, when you head off on your next road trip.

Insurances

Whilst car insurance is of course mandatory, there are other covers that you should be looking at to keep you safe during your trip. The first cover that I would recommend is the type that companies such as American Auto Shield offer, this is an insurance that covers the parts of your car against any damage which may happen to them, check out the American Auto Shield reviews for more info. You should also ensure that you have breakdown cover on your car in case the worst should occur, you can always count on breakdowns happening at the worst possible time and it always helps to have someone that you can call.

Entertainment

What road trip is complete without enough entertainment to keep everyone happy. I always like to plan this well ahead of time and I have been known to spend several hours getting the playlist just right. If you have kids then you should seriously think about getting some games and movies downloaded to their tablets or devices and also planning some games which you can all get involved in along the way. We always like to play quiz games on our road trip as well as games that are based on the things which you see on the road, with points given for each. I would also advise that you have things in the car which can be played with whilst you are waiting around, I have found a football to be the best thing for this and my kids and I throw it for hours at a time.

Destination

When I was younger and I used to go on road trips with my friends, we would always just jump in the car and go, with no particular destination. These days however, since the kids have come along, it doesn’t make for the best idea to take them away on a fruitless voyage and so I like to at the very least have a destination. During our trip we will often veer away from the route in order to explore somewhere and we may even spend a night in a different town or village, we do however, always have a destination.

The key to every successful road trip is in the preparation and if you want to make sure that you have a road trip which you are never likely to forget, make sure you plan it well.

The Benefits of a Global Montessori Education Program

September 27, 2017 by admin

Maria Montessori is known for her theory of philosophy and education which is widely being used by various schools today. Here system, aptly called the Montessori Method, focuses on developing a child’s own propensity to take initiative and improve their natural abilities. This is done especially through applying the theories and concepts that they have learnt in class. The Montessori Method also encourages children to learn at their own pace, which allows educators to consider and understand the individual needs of the children.

To accomplish the environment the Montessori Method envisions, schools will need to set-up a learning environment specifically for three significant age groups:

  • 2–2.5 years
  • 5–6 years
  • 6–12 years

Then various activities are created that will involve repetition, abstraction, communication, and exploration. The idea is to teach children in the 2-2.5 year-old age group will be taught to be inquisitive and explore their environment, the children in the 2.5-6 year-old age group will be taught to understand and repeat definitions of concepts, and the last group of children are taught to discuss abstract concepts through reasoning and creativity.

International schools adapt the Montessori Method because of its holistic approach. Particularly in a school called the Global Indian International School (GIIS), they use a Global Montessori Program (GMP) that works hand-in-hand with their award winning ‘Nine Gems’ educational framework to make sure that they are able to produce students who are socially responsible leaders who value empathy, critical thinking, and community. So there are obvious advantages to adapting the Montessori Method and combining it with an educational system that can support the method’s goals.

Creating a stimulating learning environment through the Montessori Method

As was mentioned earlier, the Montessori Method focuses on three developmental stages, each of which has learning goals that needs to be achieved. This means that schools and its educators should be able to provide an environment that encourages intellectual, emotional, and physical development throughout their whole stay in school.

International schools like the GIIS accomplishes this by adapting an ‘understanding by design’ educational format, which they famously call the ‘Nine Gems’. But without needing to enumerate all nine, the best way to comprehend ‘understanding by design’ is remembering that this kind of learning is divided into this basic taxonomy:

  • Repetition of knowledge – when students can define textbook definitions after acquiring knowledge
  • Application – when students can apply the knowledge through collaborative projects, reports, and so on
  • Creative thinking – when students can articulate their own thoughts that may or may not agree with the knowledge

Once a student is able to go through this taxonomy, it is the only time when we can truly say that they are able to arrive at their conclusions logically and soundly. The Montessori Method and the GIIS Nine Gems does this for various aspects of school life — meaning, it is not just for the academic, but also for performance and visual art, sports, and community care.

If we wish for our kids to get the best that education has to offer, look no further than an international school, with its diverse educational landscape, that adapts the Montessori Method of holistic development.

Recognising the Signs of Mental Health in Young People

September 21, 2017 by admin

A recent study has revealed that 1 in 10 children, between the ages of 5-16 suffer from a mental health condition. This is a shocking statistic, and equates to around 3 children in every classroom. If this is true, then why aren’t we doing more to help?

The truth is that so many of us are unable to differentiate between bad behaviour or young age and potential mental health problems. We need to take it upon ourselves to familiarise ourselves with the conditions and signs and set into motion a support system for those who need us.

So many children are being left undiagnosed and untreated, so whether you’re a caregiver, parent, foster parent or teacher, it’s important to be able to help these children out.

This infographic was created by www.lorimerfostering.com

Changes in behaviour:

It’s completely natural for children to push the boundaries and your patience when they are growing up, this is part of the learning process. When you say no, it can often be difficult to process and accept, which leads to acting out, this is completely normal. There is a real difference between learning right and wrong and how to behave correctly, and those who suffer from behavioural problems or other mental illnesses. Acting out can be a learning stage, which is nothing more than a passing phase; whereas if a child continuously acts out and misbehaves, with no real impact when reprimanded, then this is a big red flag.

If a child’s behaviour changes drastically, or they seem out of control, then it’s in their best interest to seek advice from a medical professional. Some of the most common symptoms are being aggressive, fighting with other children, and continuously trying to distract people at school. As a parent, it can be equally frustrating to be making no progress and to continually have to deal with a child who misbehaves, but it’s necessary to remain strong and to empathise with how your child is feeling.

Recognise the signs:

The signs can often be staring you in the face, but as this is new territory, it can be easy to dismiss them. It’s obviously easier to be able to recognise any sign with your own child, as the way they think, act and behave, is ingrained into you. Whether you’re a teacher, a child minder, or you have decided to foster a child, then it can be less apparent and it’s easier to dismiss the signs. If these symptoms of mental illness seem familiar to you, then you must ask your child about their feelings and behaviour and make them feel safe, understood and that you are there to help.

What to do next:

Educate yourself: Make sure that you are fully educated about the warning signs and ways to help people who suffer from mental health before you start to try and educate others. In order for you to be able to correctly communicate with the child’s caregivers or mental health professionals, or even to be able to help and child understand themselves, it’s important for you to be aware of the correct terms to use, what symptoms to look out for, the possible causes and also how to act.

Create awareness: By building up awareness of mental health around a school, at a social club, play group or any other place, you reduce the stigma attached to it. This means that students and children will be more likely to open up and come to terms with their feelings. Creating a safe space where feelings and troubles can be discussed, will mean that a child is more likely to open up about a subject. This is also a good way of introducing the symptoms to children so they themselves can become aware of symptoms and even recognise them themselves.

Speaking with a child: If you recognise any of the warning signs of mental illness within a child, whether they are your own or one of your students etc. it could be beneficial keep a diary of their symptoms, to ensure that they are. Having a record will allow you to spot any trends, show the reasons that have led you to believe there may be a problem, and that you haven’t just jumped to conclusions. Remember to be positive by reiterating things they’ve achieved and positive qualities before discussing your concerns. It’s also very important not to label them with any terms that could indicate a diagnosis, and instead stick to the symptoms.

Speak to someone: You need to take time to stop and think about how this is affecting you. Although the child in question and their family will be going through a stressful time, you are also likely to put a lot of strain on yourself. Rather than concealing your feelings or thoughts it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional, who will be able to help diagnose or rule out any potential conditions.

Gift them Style Without Breaking the Bank

September 21, 2017 by admin

We all have that loved one that adores fashionable accessories, shoes, and outfits in ways that we may not understand. Many assume that in order to be fashionable that you have to shell out the big bucks. The reality is, with a keen eye and savvy sense of spending, you can find pieces that are affordable and stylish. This is especially true if you are wanting to give a stylish gift to your fashionable friend or loved one. Here are some ways that you can make your fashionable gift affordable.

Sunglasses and Accessories Never Go Out of Style

For the fashion-challenged, it can be a scary and daunting task to pick out an item for our savvy loved one. Never fear! We are here to hold your hand and explain how to get those accessories. Let’s say you want to get affordable designer glasses for women but every time you check out a pair of Gucci sunglasses, you want to scream. Firstly, stop looking at Gucci sunglasses. Yes they are beautiful and quite stylish, but we want to make this easy on you. Secondly, take note of your friend or loved ones sunglasses now. What shape are they? How tinted are they? Are they simple or bejeweled? Noting what they already like makes everything easier. Lastly, hit Google and look for those shades she is already wearing. Print up a picture and use that to do an online search or take it with you to the nearest thrift store.

The same can be said for any other accessory. Necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are easy to shop for once you have an idea of what they like. Many thrift stores and second hand shops carry some higher end items that may be out of season but are still fashionable and meet your loved one’s own style statement.

Designer Clothes with a Department Price

Many folks assume designer clothes means spending thousands of dollars. Not true! The savvy shopper can learn new ways of obtaining designer apparel and paying a significantly less amount. Of course the easiest option is to hit up all the local thrift stores and second hand shops. They are a hit or miss adventure so you have to be prepared for spending time and finding nothing. Another option are to choose to shop at outlet centers for those designers you love. Many of them sell items that are no longer in season or are considered out of fashion. As long as they fit your loved ones own personal style, that doesn’t really mean much. Another big option to hit the internet are online outlet stores and second hand websites. With sites like Overstock.com and ThredUp, you can easily find some items at drastically reduced prices.

It’s Not Just for Women

Unfortunately, designer clothes seem to be associated most with women and that is simply not the case. Many men take great pride in their own personal style and love to receive gifts that reflect that style. Whether it’s a fantastic designer watch or a special new tie, don’t forget the men in your life that want to exude a specific look and sense of grace. Just be sure that you make sure any thrift store or online discount website have fantastic options for him that you can bookmark for later, he will appreciate it!

Remember that style is defined by the person, not the clothes. The clothes and accessories are merely reflections of that style. Gifting something to your friend or loved one should certainly reflect what they routinely wear and would be astounded by. If you are unsure, take a moment and sit with them as they peruse a magazine to get a feel for the things that catch their eye. You will be glad you did!

8 Rules to Decreasing Health Care Cost in Retirement

September 20, 2017 by admin

As we age, our health care needs change, often becoming more prominent than our younger years. Aches and pains become constant, prescriptions pile up and doctor visits become more frequent. Just as we start to really need health insurance the options get slimmer and more expensive. In a real catch 22, new data shows that retirement benefits are decreasing due to rising health care costs.

Getting health care coverage in retirement can be costly, but it’s not impossible. There are also things you can do to decrease the overall cost of health care coverage once you reach retirement.

Rule #1 – See If You’re Eligible for Medicare

Medicare is a federal government insurance program for older Americans that covers 80% of allowable expenses. Those who are eligible for Medicare will have most of their health care needs covered for free or a low monthly premium. The main criteria for eligibility is age. You must be 65 or older to get Medicare.

Rule #2 – Take Out a Medicare Supplemental Plan

Retirees will still have to cover some expenses while using Medicare. You can reduce the out-of-pocket expenses with a Medicare Supplemental Plan, also known as a MediGap plan. If you’re already eligible for Medicare Part A and Part B you should be able to get a MediGap plan. There is a monthly premium, but for most people, the cost is lower than going without one.

Rule #3 – Start Planning for the Future Now

It’s never too late to start planning and saving for retirement – even if you’re already old enough to qualify for Medicare. In fact, younger people are encouraged to plan for retirement medical expenses without the help of Medicare, which is projected to run out of funds for Part A coverage in 2028.

If you’re still working and haven’t signed up for Medicare yet it’s a good idea to start a Health Savings Account (HSA). They come with major tax-saving advantages. Medicare recipients can’t add to an HSA, but they can use the tax-free money in the account to pay for medical expenses after the age of 65.

Rule #4 – Don’t Forget to Anticipate Cost Increases

One of the most common mistakes that people make when they plan for retirement is to not account for increases in medical expenses. On average, health care costs increase by 5% annually. However, in retirement years it’s better to plan for a 7% increase each year.

Rule #5 – Stop Smoking

One of the quickest ways to increase health insurance cost and life insurance premiums is smoking cigarettes. Smoking can lead to a number of chronic illnesses that cost a fortune over the long run. That’s why insurers increase premiums if you smoke.

Rule #6 – Take Advantage of TeleHealth Services

If you haven’t heard of telehealth services yet you soon will. In an effort to halt the increasing cost of health care, a number of new approaches and services are being offered. Instead of meeting with a medical professional in person you can communicate in real time using an interactive audio/visual telecommunication system on your phone or computer.

Next year, telehealth services will be made available in some states. Telehealth services will also be available to Medicare recipients.

Rule #7 – Stay Healthy

Last but not least, stay as healthy as possible. A new report from Fidelity estimates that the average couple will need $275,000 for medical expenses in retirement.

Good nutrition and lifestyle habits minimize the need for medical intervention now and in the future. Getting at least seven hours of sleep a night, hitting the recommended number of minutes of weekly cardio and eating a diet of whole foods is the easiest way to avoid chronic illness and reduce the cost of healthcare in retirement. Bonus – healthy habits also increase quality of life!

Rule #8 – Sign Up for a Wellness Program

If you’re still working see if your employer offers a wellness program. Sometimes employers will offer reduced health insurance to employees that join the program and work on maintaining good health. The money you save on health care costs can be put to retirement savings for added benefit. Another advantage of wellness programs is you can learn how to create healthy habits for the future.
